So I had my Evo for about a week over one month now and I take amazing care of it, never dropped it once, have a great case on it, yet the usb port is broke which means I cannot charge my phone unless I play around with the charger for a long time and then keep the phone in that exact position. So immediate I call Sprint. The first customer care rep, after waiting about twenty minutes, gives me a different department number to call and says they handle it. The second rep does the same thing. The third rep (by this time I spent about an hour of waiting time on the phone) tells me that I have to call HTC and that they handle warranties. So I call HTC and wait another twenty minutes and the lady tells me that I have a one year warranty so I explain the problem that im having and she says that it will be covered, but I have to speak to a different department to handle it which is only open on monday through friday. So I spend three days of only using my phone very lightly to conserve battery to call on monday only to find out that the usb port being broken is "PHYSICAL DAMAGE".. are you serious ????? Ive had the phone for one month! that dosent happen after one month plus the fact that im extremly careful with phone.. so what their solution was that I send it in to HTC and they determine if it is in fact physical damage which he said it most likely is and then if it they will determine a repair cost which could be anything. and then if the repair cost is too much (more than the insurance cost) I have to pay 30 dollars just to get the phone back.. not to mention I would be without a phone for the rest of this week.. and yea I do have insurance, but I find it ridiculous that I should have to pay 150 dollars to replace a brand new phone that I know wasnt my fault that it broke

Damn ...that sucks...I take care of it to but I do worry about the usb charger too..I use it all the time and I can see the slot could get issues...it would be nice to have some sort of induction charging system so with all the frequent chargings us power users do we wouldn't have the same issue you mention...I wish you luck with your situation...

Manufacturers are using smaller and smaller connectors such as the micro usb port and not properly supporting them. I've read about the usb connectors snapping off the Evo. I've thought about putting some epoxy around mine to be sure to hold it in place for the abusive torture the connector goes thru everytime I charge the phone. Things just aren't made the way they used to be.

Where did you buy it from? Have you gone into a Corporate Sprint Store with a Repair center just to talk to them and show them the problem. From another thread a user was having the same issue. He opened up the phone (DO not do this as it voids the warranty) and saw that it just needed to be re-soldered. Anyway I find that face to face works better (for me) in these situations.

i bought it at a radio shack which is probably the reason for it breaking.. my manager at work said he used to be a manager at radio shack and for some reason customers phones would break all of the time, like way more than usual.. but i do plan on going to radio shack today and see if theres anything they can do for me. if not i guess im going to have to pay $150 bucks on top of the $200 i paid for the phone a month ago as well as the $200 i paid to get out of contract with tmobile.. woo a grand total of $550.. looks like i paid full retail price after all..smh

My wife has same issue. my sons is getting close, and I experienced it once. I actually think it is their chargers causing the issue.

Go to the HTC Support forums and find similar thread... think its called Broken EVO charging Port. Post your problem there. I think there is one on Sprint Community forum as well.

There is no way this should be breaking so soon. What happens if it happens again in 4 weeks? What happens if they acknowledge a design flaw and start fixing for free? Do you get your money back?

What is "different" in hw version 003 vs 002?

I haven't taken ours in yet. Been waiting for others to report the problem. I will give the phones back and pay early term fee for all 4 lines before I pay to have this problem fixed. no problems doing that.

I wouldn't bother with Radio Shack after the 30 days. Just get on Sprint's site and find the closet Corporate store with a Repair center. Way more helpful. What do you mean pay 150.00?

So you're paying the $7 a month or whatever for insurance, and you have to pay $150 on top of that if you need to make a claim?

If that is the case then the deductible is 100.00 but the insurance should actually cover this without the deductible (don't quote me on this).

Other people have had same problem and sprint is telling them the damage is caused by the user. and they have to pay $100 with the insurance. Bs.

I am 39 years old. I have been plugging shit in for 30+ years. I sort of have become a pro over the years. In that time, I have never broke a charging/ plug / power port.

My brother just had the same charger port issue with his EVO, he has also had it for about a month. He took it into a Sprint (corporate) Store here in Minneapolis and they swapped it out right there, no waiting. He does have the insurance but there was no deductible for this particular occurrence. I would say that if you can find a reasonable person at a Sprint store you shouldn't have an issue getting it swapped out for a new phone especially since you have the insurance.

Key info missing from this: Was it under or over 30 days? It makes all the difference.

when you pay for insurance if your phone is damaged in any way the deal is you file an insurance claim and have to pay $150 for a replacement phone rather than full retail price.. i dropped my motorola cliq within in the first month of having it (which was obviously my fault) and i filed a claim and paid about $130 for a new one.. the only upside to insurance is that (i dont know if sprints works the same way as tmobiles however) they let you keep your phone until the new one is sent in and they give you a brand new sd card.. battery.. and charger as well as letting you keep your old ones and all you have to do is send the broken phone with nothing in it.. however, these insurance plans are absolutely ridiculous.. payin $7 per month for a year even if you dont break your phone costs like $85

Same problem with an Evo bought from Radio Shack, happened 32 days after I bought it. I brought it in, they looked at it, said, "yup" and ordered me a replacement, no problems. It took a few days longer than they said, but less than a week overall, worth a shot bringing it in and trying to get it replaced.

I don't know how you treated your phone, but I was gentle with mine. Those saying its physical damage, well, if it is, HTC released a device that is faulty, because a phone that cannot handle how I plugged in the charger should never have passed testing.

Push the issue, I had no problems, but you might need to get lucky and find a rep who isn't apt to claim "physical damage."

i have three different chargers and none of them work .. or are you saying that the charger is causing the actual problem of the usb port becoming broken ?

Since it is after your 30 days, I am not sure that RS can do much. I would first take it to a Sprint repair center if you have one where you live, and then if not, take it to Sprint for a replacement. I know that it sucks that you might have to pay the $100 to get Assurion to replace it, but it really is still under warranty, so if you get the right rep/manager they might just replace it.
    Good Luck.
