I know that different phones react differently to the same ROM, but now I've seen it for myself. My husband couldn't stand it anymore so he went and got himself a Droid which I promptly rooted and installed the same 2.0.3 SS ROM that mine is running. I have both OC's at 800mhz, but for some reason his newer phone is HOT. It's pretty consistently about 5 degrees Celsius higher than mine, and it gets up into the 40's with use (which mine never does).

Is there anything I should try on his phone, maybe a different kernel, to get it to run a little cooler?

A lot of times I post things that have little factual merit that hopefully some genius can back it up with a valid reasoning...so here is another one.

    Couple of those thoughts: :)

The processor may have to settle in. Just like installing a new ROM, I think it will run smoother, and more efficiently after a few days of being installed. Give it a day or two and see how the temperatures settle.

There is not much in terms of different kernel that you can do for SS 2.0.3. I don't believe that the new lower voltage kernels (by AdamZ...there may be others) will run on a 2.0.1 based version of the OS. I could be wrong here but maybe it is time for an updated ROM for both of you if you want to try to lower temperatures. Just a suggestion :)

Sorry for the confusion, but SS 2.0.3 is a 2.1 ROM. So maybe I could try one of AdamZ's kernels...although Chevy said he tweaked this kernel to be as low voltage as possible.

Thank you, I didn't know that a processor would have to "settle in". (Duh) I will give it a few days and watch how it does.

Oops...I don't know why but you typed SS and I read Sholes lol! I'm thinking..."why are they both running such an old ROM...it wasn't that good 3 months ago...lol.

Okay, so you do have an up to date ROM...sorry for MY confusion...4 hours of sleep :) I would let it settle in and after a few days, maybe you could try AdamZ LV kernel if you are still having issues. I honestly don't give temperatures that much attention unless I am testing where it runs under stress (Max Temp).

Ha ha :D I'm actually becoming quite addicted to running the "latest"...I sense Koush's in my future.

It will be interesting to see if his device stabilizes...I hope so. I was such a joy to root a brand-spankin' new Droid. :p

Yeah, It might be nice to find a good stable ROM and then just QUIT...for at least a month...I just don't have the will power!

I think this might actually be more common than it seems. I ran into the same issue with my friend who recently got a Droid. Of course I rooted his phone (didn't really give him a choice) and stuck BB on there since it's what I was using at the time. Same version, same kernel, same clock speed. His is running noticeably warmer. Stability and speed seem the same, but there's definitely a difference in measurable and noticeable temps.

Maybe the older Droid's handle it better? Mine's a 39/09 and his is brand new. It could also be, as UBRocked suggested, that maybe there's some sort of break-in period. How long has he been rooted?

It also could do with ours have been running a while before overclocked. That would explain the newer Droids not doing as good.

He got the phone Friday morning and I rooted it hours later. :D

It may also have less in the way of battery life. Is it possible that Motorola changed the chip for recent phones? Is there any way to tell?

In any case, I'm just going to watch it for now.

Difference between a Monday phone and a Wednesday phone.

Monday Phone = All employees hate Mondays... everything is a chore.... they hate there job.... soooo... phone's that are assembled on Monday are Monday phones. ;)

Wednesday Phone = Employee is set in the week... focused... it's hump day... only two more days to weekend.... 1 if you live in Ireland.. :). Soooo phone's that are assembled on Wednesday are Wednesday phones.. ;)

    Got it... lol.

I have mentioned this in a prior post, but to go along with what others have said, all hardware basically has a break-in period.

With desktop computers this has always been a topic regarding overclocking. A fresh out of the box cpu tends to run hotter, and after a while it "loosens up" and cools down at that setting. You then OC and it gets hot, then cools. Stepping like this usually results in faster speeds and better overall performance. Our droids are most likely fairly similar as the are basically a handheld computer as well.

Another thing to note, is not all hardware is the same. No CPU is ever going to perform the exact same as a similar model, they all have their own tolerances due to quality of materials and manufacturing. Not only can the CPU be different, but also the temperature sensors will possibly read a bit different as well.

As long as you're not seeing extreme temperatures, I wouldn't be concerned with it. After a while it should settle down a bit. I don't know if our phones use any kind of thermal compound over the processor (though I'm sure they probably do), that can also take a little while to set, which will drop temps a bit once it has.

Well, you guys were right. His temps have stabilized tremendously in the last few days, esp. after switching him to a low voltage kernel as he's hoping to save battery life. Whew! I thought maybe I had cooked it.

Thank god you didn't fry his Droid. I would divorce my wife if she broke mine!

Obviously we have gotten off topic. So I think this thread should be moved to the "I spend too much time with my phone...not enough time with my wife and am currently seeking referrals for a good marriage counselor!" sub-forum! :D

Check the battery useage on each Droid to look for differences in what is generating the heat.

Maybe he is playing more games on his! :)
