I have been reading a lot on this issue since my 3 week old Eris has started moving the home screens and cursors to the far left but only when charging. Is there a fix to this I can do myself? I know if I go to Verizon (corp store) they will offer to replace it with a FRU model (refurb) and I will not have that since this phone is brand new. Since being a Verizon customer for 4 years I have had FRU replacements all resulting in a replacement phone that has even more issue's than the one it replaced which then resulted in a multi model FRU to a new phone (Samsung Gleam (2 replacements) to a new Env2 (3 Env's) then to an new LG voyager that lasted 2 years.

What worries me is that Verizon has dropped the Eris and if I cant get a new Eris replacement I know they are going to throw the cinder block sized Moto Droid at me. :(

    So what should I do?

As far as I know you have four choices.

    1) Try a different charging cable, in case the one you've got is bad.
    2) Don't use your phone while it's charging.
    3) Take it to Verizon and get a replacement.
    4) Live with it.

If you've been reading the forum, you've seen where no one has ever found a way to fix this problem, the phone has always needed to be replaced.

You don't have much of a choice but to trade it in for a refurb, that much more likely than not will have the same problem. I traded one in for the same problem (except mine scrolled left on or off the charger) and got one that scrolls left while only on the charger.

If you keep trading it in (maybe 4 times) they will likely give you the option to change phones. Someone reported being able to purchase a refurbed Incredible after trading in their Eris 4 times. I'm hesitant to buy a refurb from Verizon, as I think the refurb process includes a factory reset and maybe some cosmetic changes but does not address hardware problems.

So I guess you're stuck between a rock and a hard place. The Eris, by and large, sucks. It's slow and has some major hardware issues. And it seems the refurbs are no better than what you sent the phone in for in a lot of cases. I'm sure someone will say that they have no problems with their Eris, and I'm way off base. Well, I've read enough on here to know that many of the Eri (plural for Eris) are lemons. There's no reason this many people should be having this much trouble.

Thanks for the input. It does it on the car charger and house charger both. I have a friend with an Eris that has no problems with the phone at all and is the reason I got mine. Leave it to me to be the one that gets a lemon! I will tell you one thing... this phone is 3 weeks old and will NOT be replaced with a used refurb as I have been down this route with Verizon many, many...... MANY times. It wont hurt me one bit to throw down $300 for a cancel fee. LOL!

If you bought it from verizon you have 30 days to return it. You can get a brand new phone in the first 30 days. I am not sure how they handle purchases from other vendors, but best buy will also take the phone back in the first 30 days. Make your move before you hit 4 weeks or a refurb will be your only option.

Good news everyone! (Futurama Old Man)... When I took my Eris to the corp store they stripped the software off the phone and reinstalled everything afterwards the phone was still doing the scrolling left while charging problem. The girl came to me and said that she was told by her manager that my phone had to be replaced with another model since the Eris has been discontinued and another one could not be ordered. She also told me I am under my 30 days and I was in fact due for a brand new phone of my choice of similar value. So that meant the Moto Droid... Left without a choice really I decided that would be fine and took ownership of the new Moto. I didn't have to pay any difference either... So if your Eris is doing this Verizon is very aware of the issue and the tech told me today the problems with the Eris is the reason it has been pulled.

Thanks for everyones help and input.

BTW The Moto Droid isn't such a bad phone but I sure do miss my Clock/Weather Widget!!!

You got pretty lucky there. Glad it all worked out in the end. The rest of us will have to settle for refurbs though.

I've had my Eris for over a year (and am frankly counting the days until I can get a different phone) and the cursor and screens have randomly started jumping to the left, particularly while sending a text. I see mention that this may be a known issue? Pointers please?

It sounds like the trackball scrolling left issue. The Eris is sensing that you are constantly scrolling the trackball left, so (in Sense) it will think you want to move to the leftmost homescreen, and when trying to enter text it will think you are trying to move the cursor to the left constantly.

You can *try* cleaning it by rolling the trackball on a clean piece of printer/copier paper - the paper may be able to help clean any dirt off the ball, if that is the issue. The major issue, as I understand it, is that the trackball electronics are just above the USB port and possible rocking of the USB connector can cause the trackball sensor to malfunction.

Some also say that mashing the trackball down hard can fix it, but I would never do that myself.

I'm not sure if anybody else knows any more; I believe that this is typically a replacement issue.

Definitely a replacement issue. Several people have managed to get their Eris replaced with the Incredible. It takes persistence and lots of time on the phone. You may have to go through a refurbished unit or two first. Call during normal business hours.

this happens to me too! i read that if you get a system reset it goes away, but you lose all your downloaded apps and contacts that weren't saved to google.

A system reset probably won't help if it is the trackball bug. This isn't caused by any software glitch, but by the poor design and placement of the trackball and the usb port on the phone.

You can keep replacing the phone until you're blue in the face, I don't think you'll have any luck. Mine does this, my wife's does this, and a million other people all experience the same problem. HTC or Google needs to come up with a solution to this - I don't want to switch to a non-Google phone, but I'm finding it hard to trust them to work properly anymore. The Eris, at times, becomes completely unusable because of this issue.

it isn't a google problem, it was an HTC problem that they have fixed since then. They have moved the usb port away from trackballs and they have stopped using trackballs. No reason to switch to a non android phone for this reason.
