Is it really worth the effort considering how slow Sprints/Virgin's 3G speeds are, and the throughput only gets worse by tethering or using it as a hotspot.

he's right. sprint towers are terrible especially if you're on virgin and your data has been throttled. tethering the wifi the legit way is still a waste of time (root style) even with a good DNS you're better off just driving your laptop to the nearest wifi spot and getting a twenty MB download speed or better.i mean if you have a technique that gives similar DL/UL speeds please say so.

The sad part is that many people don't see much if any speed decrease after hitting the 2.5 GB limit and being throttled. In a lot of areas there really isn't that big of a difference. :banghead:

Depends on how you intend to use it.
As a primary connection for other devices it is not worth it.
But as an emergency connection when power goes out locally, it is very handy.
Also great for use with a tablet on a road trip.
Actually I rooted the RISE as soon as I got it just for that reason.
It was very handy on the Optimus V I had since day one, used it many times.

Not working. This app is not working for me. Tried using newer versions and older versions, it won't let my laptop connect to the hotspot.

Once you've rooted there are quite a few tethering options.

Wifi Tether for root works great if rooted, and it's free in play
