How do I clear up disappearing internal memory ?

I just received my first warning "my internal memory was getting low". I have the same number of apps I installed 5 months ago. But my internal memory has been steadily going down. I have cleared out browser cache, cookies, form data and any thing I could shut off or eliminate. I still only have 17 mb. Of memory left. My phone is getting sluggish too.

    All help will be appreciated..........

How about old mail? I have 5 email accounts, using the stock email app, each one has individual settings for how long to keep the mail on the phone. I had accidently set all of mine to for ALL. Resetting it to 3 days, eliminated a bunch of old mails, and cleared up a lot of space.

Go to each email acct, then menu/more/settigs/send and receive/download options. Set the preference to a lower number.

Also check and delete old sms messages.

17MB of internal memory isn't much. you can go to settings, applications, manage applications, then ensure you view all, and sort by size. this will show you the biggest apps first. if this just recently started occurring, then it's likely you're seeing the facebook problem reported in numerous posts in this forum. in that case you will see "contacts storage" or "contacts data" showing a large amount of memory. if that is the case, you need to turn off facebook sync, and then clear data in those, and your contacts will resync with google on the next sync and you'll be good to go so long as you don't turn facebook sync back on. otherwise, you will see there what apps are taking up all your memory.

Well I don't sync with Facebook or Google.
But I will go sort apps by size and see what I get.
Thank for the responses and with your help we'll get my memory back......

Also I clear all email and texts every night.

Sorry, I misunderstood. My stock mail app is 3.67MB (yes THREE point six seven), and I have 5 email accounts. I would check the settings like I mentioned.

My largest is Maps and Sirius, they are around 7.5 MB's and Gmail is 3.17 MB's, something is wrong if you are getting 32 MB's for your Gmail

Well then there is a chunk of memory going to that mail app. I have that setting you were talking about set today. I must have old email sitting somewhere, but where?

Be sure to look at both mail apps. Mail and Gmail. You may have a bunch of gmail in the inbox you don't ever read.

No, I'm a real good house keeper. I even delete the tokens and stuff off the SD card. I only have two email accounts and I clear them with my desk top computer also. Weird my mail app is 10x larger then anyone's. It's like there is hidden deleted mail in memory...

It's problems like this that drive me crazy. Makes me think that Android is not ready for prime time. Or my next phone will something other than HTC.

Well, the only other thing I can think of is to delete the mail accounts, reboot the phone, then re-enter them.

    Now that is doable.
    I'll report back with results......

If that doesn't work then I would call Sprint a friend of mine had some what of the same issue and they resolved it, I don't remember what they did and I cannot reach him now or I would find out for you, but give them a call, good luck

Well thesis how it turned out.
I deleted my two email accounts and re installed them. I gained 2mb of memory. But I also discovered is the memory is different where and which app you use to check it. The application size is, I'm guessing 1. 5mb. Then in the app manager its 15mb. And in Estrongs app manager its now 29mb.

But the main Settings - SD - internal memory line it says my internal memory is 17mb. So go figure.....

DonB, well I called Sprint on Friday and got the advanced tech support and the only thing this guy could offer me as a repair was a hard reset of my phone all the way back to factory settings. I explained this was not an answer for me as I didn't want to have to reload and reset and rebuild everything. Besides my phone is rooted and I didn't know where that hard reset would take me. So my memory is still wasting away.

One last comment, not sure if this is a Android issue or an HTC issue but their common response to a phone that has issues or a program that has issues is a total and hard reset of the device. I know I can't be the only one that thinks this is a lousy option but I will be researching this more when it comes time to upgrade my device.........

    :(

Yes I agree a solution to all issues is always a hard reset with the manufacture or phone carriers, bummer and I very much agree, and I feel your pain as I have done many HR and to no avail with some issues, but if I may, I have a suggestion, since you are rooted maybe you may want to post this issue in the rooted section and maybe someone is having the same issue on a rooted phone, worth a shot, good luck

Good Morning DonB......... Thanks for the suggestion and I have posted this question over there to no avail. I guess the rooted folks either don't suffer with this or have no answer. At any rate I'm going to play with "task killers" and see what that does. I have looked in the market for "memory managers" and that seems to be what comes up. So I'm going to give it a go when I get a chance..........

Thanks again for your suggestions and help.......

I would suggest NOT to install a task killer on your rooted phone, are you still on damage? Maybe reflash damage or try something new, the RC1 (froyo, 2.2) is stable now

On more thing you may want to did if you have not already done so is also post at the XDA site there, they have many rooters there and may just have a solution to your problem, I myself have tried the ATK and did not see any use for it, if it would close out the programs @ startup everytime I may have kept it but I am stock, so it may very well work better on a rooted phone, so keep us posted, good luck and if I hear anything I will report back

I would like to think the manufacturers at some point will reason out the fact that full reset is not reasonable solution and realize something along the lines of restore points such as pc's have or a better way to analyze (system tools) to troubleshoot the system because if they don't the problems can only get worse as more stress's are placed on the processor/os..

I am following through as I alway do to thank you all for your help and tell you how I resolved the problem. I received some great advice from everyone and the last tip, which is usually my luck was the best.

The bottom line someone questioned why I thought I lost root. I explained what was going on and the best and final suggestion was to down load the latest Superuser.apk and flash through "recovery". Yes I had to ask exactly what that meant but I followed the directions and did it. Problem solved. I had SU working on my phone for Root Explorer and Titanium Backup. Then I downloaded Cachecleaner and it worked this time perfectly and it found 25MB of junk on my phone and cleared it out. So now I'm running 40MB of internal memory with all my programs working rather snappy now. In my estimation I screwed up the SU with the memory manager that was recommended somewhere along the line. When it didn't do anything for me I uninstalled it and I think my SU went with it. But the phone is fixed and I want to thank you all for your time in responding to my problem and requests. Sometimes multiple............

    Thanks again.....
