How do you know when 4G?

How do you know when 4G is turned on in your neck of the woods? I'm in the Bay Area and I plan on picking up the EVO when we have 4G but I don't know how to know? Thanks!

At the very bottom there is a link that says "See 4G cities" You can see what cities are on the list to come up in "the near future" which i would guess by the end of the year. You can also sign up for updates.

Can anyone tell me the "reach" of 4G? I'm in St. Petersburg, FL, and I know Tampa is getting 4g this year. We're just on the other side of Tampa Bay; about 15 miles from downtown to downtown (as the crow flies) with 5 of that being the bay. Does water cause a problem? Am I going to regret my presale purchase?
