how does it handle calls?

I am yet another person in the market for a new phone after owning a Eris.

The number one thing for me is finding a phone that doesn't lag when it comes to calls. How does the Fascinate measure up? Can you answer a call right away, can you make a call right away without lag or freezing up even the tinest?

What about those who use google voice? Does it work well with the phone?

Sorry for all the questions, I got to play with the phones a little bit but I didn't have the chance to test call quality.

I have not seen any form of lag with this phone at all. Call comes in and you are able to answer it right away. Placing calls is just as quick and painless. I still clear the call log on a regular basis out of habit though. Google voice calls have been very smooth as well.

Another big plus is that the vibrate actually works like a regular phone.

Overall the phone part functions like a regular phone for me.

That's good to hear, I don't use the phone part that often but when I do my Eris drives me bonkers.

I've had mine for over a week now. The call quality coming in is top notch. You can hear the person you're talking to perfectly. But, I've had numerous complaints on how I sound on their end. I sounded far away from the phone, tinny, and robotic. But, when I was on speaker phone everyone said they heard me perfectly. I may return mine to best buy for another unit, but from what i hear it seems to be a defect with the phone.

    Hope that helps.

Very good call quality. Much better then how my Incredible sounded, and no lag at all within the phone application.

    Two things:
One, my call quality is great. The phone itself is terrific and on BT is even better. This is the sharpest clearest BT performance I've ever had.

Two, TSD and OTD have very similar looking avatar pics; must be related

Be cautioned, there have been NUMEROUS accounts of people returning/exchanging their phones for a new one due to call quality issues. Some have had issues hearing themselves when they talk, and others have had those they're talking to complain they sound rather strange. You may have to go through an exchange or two to get a phone that works entirely well.

My Eris drove me bonkers as well. The call history lag sucked big time. I would go to place a call from recent history. The RIGHT NAME would flash green when I clicked it, and then it would call SOMEONE ELSE. That's right. The allcaps means I really am shouting this. That's how mad my Eris made me when trying to place calls. I can feel my blood starting to boil again just thinking about it ....

The Eris was almost a year long nightmare in phoneland for me. Verizon replaced it three times. The first time was for a defective speaker that started to put out distorted tones and voice to the extent that it was causing some serious pain in the ear, and the dialer on every single on has been a pain in the rear.

Not only does the Fascinate actual dial a call when you hit the green button, but it also answers a call right when you hit the green button, or ignores it right away when you hit the red button. And IMMEDIATELY after you place or receive a call, the proper call is appropriately listed in your call history.

I've used the dialer on the original droid with 2.1 and 2.2, the dialer on the Eris, on the Incredible, and on the Droid X. The dialer on the Fascinate is my absolute favorite to date.

The only thing that this GOOGLE PHONE needs to have better integration with is GOOGLE. Again, I am truly shouting. I have shouted this at the folks at Verizon, and I will continue to do so until they fix it.

To get the full phonebook features, such as caller ID ringtones, you actually have to make a local phone contact in addition to your google contact. What the heck??? THIS IS A GOOGLE PHONE!!! But Verizon for some reason tries to hide that as much as possible on the Fascinate. Bing this. Bing/Verizon that. The back of the phone doesn't even say google on it. I have no idea how Verizon used Google's OS and managed to pull that one off. I don't know that I've ever seen a Windows PC or laptop in Best Buy for sale without a Windows sticker on it somewhere. And I've been there almost 6 years and seen hundreds of thousands of computers go through that store.

De-binging and de-bloating is remarkably easy, as is rooting. But that's the one phone call related gripe I will warn you about - you've got to make two copies of every contact to reap the full benefits of Google backing them up, and being able to utilize all the features the phone has to offer on caller ID, such as custom ringtones and more advanced contact information.

Other than that, it is a spendid phone, and the dialer truly is the best.

It's awesome to hear about it actually being able to make calls etc.

Kind of a bummer about the contact list, could this be something fixed in 2.2?

I've decided to get what bestbuy offers for FPF as long as it's the DX or Fascinate. If they don't offer either of those phones i'll go get it for 50.00

Also i'm planning on rooting eventually. My husband(being the saint that he is) is keeping the Eris and rooting that one first so we can make sure we can do it.

Rooting really is quite simple and you know there are quite a few former Eris owners here now sporting the SF. I assure you when you and hubby decide to root it will only take a few minutes :)

They had the Fascinate as Verizon's phone this last Friday, and it's rather improbable they'll offer it again. The DX, with selling so well, is also improbable as being selected in the coming Fridays for Verizon's phone. The only Android I foresee being selected for Verizon would be the Incredible due to its recent surge in stock.

There was a rumor it might be up again, but honestly it's not a big deal.

I agree that it'll probably be the incredible, but a girl can hope lol

My call quality is actually pretty good. Sometimes I get zero bars on my screen, but the conversation appears normal. Maybe a bug? Could be where I'm living too...

ROOT ROOT ROOT!!! It's so worth it. It can be done in minutes, too. I rooted the Droid X and my Fascinate.

I must warn you. It's not without risk. I rooted my sister's Fascinate, and while installing Launcher Pro it hardlocked and pretty much completely bricked. All I got was a black screen after that, no matter how long you waited.

But the good news is, I spent an entire day trying to get it fixed, and I can walk you through restoring it step by step if that happens to you! And it won't take you all day either. I just happened to have really slow internet at my mom's house on that weekend, and the first 300+ meg download that you need for a complete restore did not download completely the first time!!! It got corrupted and I had to start it again. About a two hour download. I don't know how they have such poor download speeds right in the middle of such a large town, and so close to Salt Lake City!!!

Seriously though, rooting is worth it. Some of the bloat and crap on new verizon phones simply can't be completely eliminated without rooting.

I would FREAK out if I bricked, but that fact that it can be revived makes it not so scary.

Nope. Not too scary. I was freaking out, but I got it working. I re-rooted it, and did all the stuff to clean/tweak it, including launcher pro. Haven't overclocked it yet. Saps here has about got me convinced to overclock mine, though ...

But yeah, don't worry. You have a fantastic community here that can help you out. In fact, some things really went horribly wrong in the restore process of my sister's phone that have not really happened to hardly anyone else, and we were still able to figure it all out. By "we" I mean the forum here and on XDA forums. But because of my nightmare of an experience, I am pretty confident I would walk someone through the process if anything were to go awry. And if something comes up that I don't know, someone else here will. Lots of smart people using droid phones.
