The ONLY reason I'm thinking of rooting my phone is because it's running laggy. I have a task-killer and use it all the time, but I still experience minor lag when texting and switching between tasks. It's more pronounced by comparison, after I've used my friend's Droid for a few minutes.

Will rooting and using setcpu give me a noticeable improvement?

You will most definitely see an improvement. But overclocking is not the only benefit of controlling your CPU speed: you can also underclock. Why on earth would you do that? Battery life. Since rooting, I've configured SetCPU using "profiles" that change the CPU speed based on the state of the phone. When I'm actively using the phone, I've given it a range of 250mhz to 1000mhz, which makes everything really, really snappy. When the phone is sleeping, I've given it a range of 250mhz to 250mhz, which immensely improves the battery life, which as you know isn't so great on the Droid. Some people set the sleep range to 250mhz to 600mhz, because waking it up from 250mhz can sometimes be a little laggy, but that doesn't seem to bother me. Of all the benefits of root, I think SetCPU is the number one benefit. The rest is icing on the cake.

    Good luck!

Thanks, that's exactly what I was thinking! I already have the navi and tether; the other stuff I really could care less.

So do I have to downgrade the 1.5 to root, or can I root 1.6? Also, what happens when I get my 2.1 update? Will that undo my root and settings?

I don't want to downgrade to 1.5 because I REALLY like the voice navigation.

You will have to downgrade to 1.5, but don't worry its not like your phone will be stuck there. No one would want to root if that was the case. The firmware version is based on the rom that you decide to flash. For example I right now have SuperD which is running on firmware 1.6, that's why its called SuperD (Super Donut) Anyway, there are all kinds of other roms, even a number of 2.1 roms.

So anyway, about the 2.1 update, you will not get that. Since you aren't running the default 1.6 that T-mobile gave you, you won't get that update. But once you root you might not care, I know I don't. Because the rom I'm running is much better than what I had, and its better than the 2.1 roms that I've tried. There isn't that many differences between 1.6 and 2.1, I believe its mainly just looks and organization of things. Anyone may correct me and add to what makes them different but I still don't think its that great of an upgrade, especially for a Mytouch that can't really handle it.

Anyway, I can help you with rooting if you need just search for me on Gmail and chat with me - jordanfritzsche@gmail.com Rooting isn't that difficult, but it can be very confusing. Here is a guide for it - Cyanogen Wiki

By the way, do you have the old or new v1.2 Mytouch?

I want to add that the two main roms (CyanogenMod and SuperD) for the MyTouch come overclocked, so you don't need SetCPU or anything with them.

Also, while we wouldn't get the OTA update to 2.1, it's a pretty safe bet that someone will build a rom off of it. Cyanogen is just waiting on the drivers, I think, and St0kes has already built a fairly functional one, from what I've read.

Yeah exactly, in 2.1 roms the camera works sort of, but the video camera force closes every time because it doesn't have the drivers for it.

And if you don't think you have enough roms to choose from, look here

Thanks! I'm on the original, I think. No 3.5mm headphone jack or anything, so that means I'm on the old one, right?

Yep thats the original v1.0, so the rooting will be easy, the v1.2 can be a little tricky. But just follow that Guide in my post and just get me on Google Chat if you need help, I'm open for questions, good luck!

How good are the chances to break your phone when you try root it?

It's actually pretty hard to brick the phone.

That's reassuring. :) I'm gonna play with this over the summer, when I'm only working full-time and not going to school AND working full-time.

Do you happen to have a list of frequencies for your mytouch? No matter what I type in setcpu.txt I can't seem to get anything past 576Mhz.

Haven't done this yet. In april I broke my foot and had to do my insane schedule and insane commute on crutches, then I got into a car accident during that time. Only just now coming back to this idea.

Ok, ran the rooted 1.6 for a while and it was ok. Now running CM 5.0.8 and LOVE it for the 1 hour it's been up. Definitely runs a little slower, but setcpu allows me to go up to 576, where on 1.6 it only allowed 528. I find that a little odd.

Think it's safe to run at that speed?
