I need the GPS to work, as well as the solid battery life and performance afforded in the likes of CM7.

I see. Is it possible to use the rooted stock ROM (that allows GPS to work), while using other methods of battery life and performance enhancement? And then for "customization" of appearance, go with a secondary launcher?

This is actually a valid question, since I don't root, but am curious if battery life and performance can be enhanced without using a ROM.

You wouldn't have quite the same customization options, or at least they would take a little more work to attain. Not sure about how other kernels work with rooted stock Sense 2, but that's an interesting idea. Performance could be enhanced with an overclocker of some sort, I think. Any rooters out there ever just played with rooted stock?

I see. That would be my only suggestion and at least resolve your issue of not being able to have GPS. That would kill me also. I use Nav a lot, especially w/ L.A. being so big and going to areas in the city that I've never been (or finding alternate routes that might be faster).

If I were to root my phone, I'd almost prefer going with a stock ROM and just using a secondary launcher for customized appearance. It would take more time for sure, but the benefits (to me) would be greater. If I hadn't upgraded to the MoPho, I know this is likely the route I'd take with the EVO.

It's hard for me to really give you some more "thorough" advice, since I don't root, but hopefully this will get you going in another direction that you might not have considered before (but will actually work for your needs).

Have you tried MikG yet? I know you don't love Sense, but it has been the most rock-solid rom I've used yet, and I get great battery life, even on the stock kernel. And everything works. Works better than stock, actually.

Also, if you don't want to use the sense rosie but want the reliability of MikG for GPS etc, this guy here created a "senseless" version.

    Just my 2 cents. :)

Not your dream, Apple's dream. They control every part of your experience. iPHone is good for Executive types that don't know sh#t about technology or old ladies.

Nothing against brain dead Executive types or old ladies. My mom is an old lady and needs an iPhone. ;)

Kind of an oxymoron to call an executive type "brain dead" if you ask me. Obviously, something worked right in their brain that enabled them to become an executive...LOL. Bad generalization, if you ask me.

Like being the son of the owner/ceo? Those jobs are generally gotten and kept in a tight knit group of people.

I'm basically in waiting mode my contract with Sprint completes in June of next year. I may just wait for the iPhone 5 and see what that has to offer, or move to Verizon because of LTE and get the latest phone with ice cream sandwich. The main thing I'm looking for is a phone that takes great photos and videos, HTC needs to step up in that department.

If I don't get a job with Sprint (Waiting for the call today) I'm switching to Verizon, if I can talk my Fiancee into it.... Which will be challenge enough.

I have literally zero Service in my Apartment, unless I'm by the Slider Window. My Mom visited with her iPhone with Verizon, and had FULL service where I have an X. I ****ing hate my EVO, and I hate Sprint too lately. I'm sick of having service when I'm outside only.

The only thing i've been disappointed with Sprint is the "we're moving up your upgrade date" thing. I was eligible last July, but without anything nicer available yet, i was out of luck when the Photon and Galaxy SII came out. My upgrade got bumped to next May.

I love my EVO, but i have 2 major issues:

I'm a resource hog, so it's hard to keep myself held back on massive apps that can't be shipped to the microSD card.

And the card is the other issue. I keep having bad glitches with the card, and it's not the card's fault. I may see if i can get my EVO repaired/replaced.

When May rolls around, i'm jumping ship to something that has more internal memory, and hopefully it won't corrupt the contents of the card. But until then, aside from the card issue (which bugs me more than the memory), i'll enjoy what i do like about the EVO. It's still a nice little machine.

 I thought the button-less thing was just based on how Samsung built the new Nexus phone for Google. I wasn't aware that it's supposed to be a common thing for all ICS phones, especially since there was a recent report that there are many current Smartphones in the market running Gingerbread that will be getting ICS, once it's released.

Well obviously because these are older phones upgrading to ICS. But I assumed that the new phones coming in 2012 were going to be buttonless. I could be wrong.

Call Sprint and complain about not getting service at the house. Ask for an Airave for free. I had crappy service at the house (which means none!) and once I complained they sent me an Airave. Perfect signal and 3G data! It connects to the house internet connection and broadcasts phone signal and data like a wifi router. Plus when I use the phone over the Airave it doesn't count toward my monthly minutes. ;)

Also this phone still competes with the newer phones out. Research and root that thing!! The evo is seriously a beast that was never fully unleashed. I'm currently running sense 3.5 on my evo and it runs flawlessly. I get over 20 hours of moderate use and everythign works great. No complaints here. I'll keep my evo until the quad cores come out with LTE. If you don't root the evo, you're missing out on a seriously great phone.
Stop over at the all things root section, we'll help you. It's really easy once you know what to do. :)
