Help How to avoid cropping pictures?

I hate the fact when someone sends me a picture and when I added it as a contact picture it has me crop it to an extremely small pic that doesn't even capture the entire shot. How do I get around this? Help! The same goes for adding as a wallpaper, how can I just add the picture as it is? I've stretched the 4 corners and still it cuts it off.
