Root How to backup/recover your original ROM

Hi,

I have googled and searched on XDA, but I couldn't get the right answers. I have found topics which were like +/- 4 years old and other topics which were only made for (example) the HTC hero.

Is there a general howto for android phones, or are the howto's really only made for certain phones?

I'm running Android 2.1 on my Flipout... XDA referred me to this site?
