Any help with doing this would be gratefully received. I have unlocked my phone from Orange with an unlock code supplied by them. I don't want to root as I don't anticipate doing anything adventurous - primarily as I don't think I am sufficiently competent.

    Thanks

First, you need to create a gold card. There are plenty of guides on how to do this so find one. Make your everyday sd card your gold card as you'll need it for all future updates - it saves having to swap them all the time

Once done, find an unbranded RUU file (like the one in my signature - the latest unbranded 2.2 ROM). Run this file with the gold card in your phone and it'll debrand the phone.

Dear Eddy OS, I have made numerous attempts to download the files you suggested but Winzip then tells me that there is an error in the file, possibly due to a download error, and it can't open it. I am using Winzip 15 trial version.
Am I doing something daft and do you have any suggestions?
    Sorry to be a pain!

Dear EddyOS. I have got the file working - removed Winzip and let Windows do it!!
One other question, if I rooted my phone (?revoked or unrevoked) would this remove the need for a goldcard?

    Many thanks for your help.

    You need a goldcard.

If you flash a rom and things go wrong, sometimes the only means of recovery are to use an RUU. Since there is no orange RUU, you have to use an Unbranded one which will not be possible on a branded handset without a gold card.

Thanks DanFrance. I did debrand it using a goldcard and it went like a dream. The only thing that puzzled me was that when I first installed the goldcard files they were just empty folders, I assume that they get populated during the debranding process, I haven't checked yet. Is it correct that if I leave the goldcard in place I will get OTA updates from HTC?

    Many thanks,

Dear EddyOS thanks a million I debranded as you suggested and it went so smoothly I was stunned. The only confusing thing was that when I installed the goldcard that was emailed to me it seemed to take np space on the SD card so I had a look and it consisted of empty files - I assume that they get populated during unbranding, I will check shortly. With the goldcard left in place will I continue to get OTA updates from HTC? By the way having reloaded my apps and shifted those I can to the SD card my internal memory is down to about 110 Mb, is this acceptable?
Once again many thanks for your interest and help.
    Best regards,

    PJW (Bolton)

Don't worry about it, leave the card as it is and enjoy the phone. 110MB is fine, I'm on 80MB-ish with the apps I use installed

Hi, new to this. I've got an HTC Desire, bought second-hand, is unlocked but still has Virgin Media loading screen. I'm on Orange at the mo. Still on Android 2.1 and want to get Froyo but not sure how. Software number is 1.15.405.3. Will the above work for me too? I think my HBOOT is lower than 0.93....
    Cheers :)

Dear Scott I suspect it will but I am not an expert, why not ask EddyOS he was extremely helpful to me. You can find out what hboot you are on by powering off and then powering on whilst also holding down the volume down key, you will see the Hboot version on the display. Also why not manually check whether there are any upgrades for your phone, there certainly is a 2.2 from orange with Hboot .93 but you will need then to use the EddyOS procedure to get it to work properly, i.e. tether and for the wifi hotspot to work.
    Hope this helps,

    Hi,

Hope you don't mind me joining in on this thread.

I'm very new to owning a smartphone.

I bought a second hand HTC Desire sim unlocked but clearly not debranded from O2.

I'm on giffgaff who happen to use the O2 network and only recently got the OTA Froyo (2.2, HBoot 0.930001) update although I assume this must also be O2's version.

I think that I'd very much like to debrand the 'phone but don't quite understand how to do this.

I've managed to create the GoldCard but how do I 'run' the RUU file with it?

Sorry if this is a somewhat noddy question but as said, I'm very new to all of this!

    1. Put gold card in the phone
    2. Have HTC Sync installed on the PC
    3. Connect phone to PC
    4. Select HTC Sync on the phone
    5. Run the RUU once Sync on the PC shows connected

    Hi again,

By 5, do you mean clicking on 'Radio: 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27' and downloading? Will the RUU 'run' automatically or is there something else I have to do?

    Sorry if it's a noddy question!

Thanks PJW, my Hboot version is 0.75. I've tried manually checking but there's nothing. The phone looks like it was on Virgin Media before unlocking as the loading screen shows Virgin. I have an Orange contract but no updates showing. How do I get update to Froyo?? Do I get it via Orange or Virgin Media or somewhere else??

Dear Kenwin the file you need to download is the following :
    RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.2_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed

If you run it it will guide you through the process and for me the whole thing ran like clockwork and was completed in less than 10 minutes. Do be careful to follow the instructions to the letter.

    All the best,

    PJW

hi, i've a locked and branded htc desire to orange. it came running android 2.2 and it's HBOOT is 0.93 and PVT4. i'm unsure whether the screen is Amoled or SLCD tho. but if the screen was SLCD, would i be able to use the above ROM and debrand my phone without any issues? in other words, is that ROM compatible with my desire?

thanks, any help would be appreciated :)

Dear Uzair, I am not sure whether it will work with an SLCD screen or not, in my initial trawlings I got the impression that it wouldn't. Apparently it should tell you on the box whether the screen is SLCD.
If you want an unlock code you can get it from Orange after you have had the phone for a month, they will charge you

    Hi,

Another n00b here coming out of the shell...
I've an unlocked HTC Desire from 3UK. I'm just about ready to take that leap to Root and reflash. While googling for info, I came upon some old/early articles implying the unlocked phones sometimes go back to a locked state after flashing. Is there any truth in this?

I haven't come across such cases. I think as long as you have the Goldcard and RUU of your original carrier (3UK), you are good to go.

Get the exact RUU from here: RUUs

Just in case, read this up to date Rooting FAQ: http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/221212-faq-rooting-updated-16th-may-2011-a.html
