I'm brand new to Android and just got an LG Vortex. I can't figure out how to use ringtones as notifications for SMS/Email, etc. I downloaded ringtones and was able to get them into the list for calls, but they don't show up in the choices for notifications. How do I do that? Please...very explicit and simple instructions needed! Thanks!

If you make a folder called 'notifications' on your sdcard, files placed in there will show up as options for SMS/emails etc :)

The same method works for 'ringtones' and 'alarms'.

any idea on how to set these diff ring tones once you get them to be available for selection?

i set them in the individual app - email/cal/sms, but the system seems to default to the main sound settings form the home screen settings

this is very frustrating - please help me

The general principle is that you set your default notification tone in the general settings. If you check the settings for newly installed apps, they will usually be 'default' (i.e. the one you set in the general settings) until you go into the settings for that and and tell it differently.

Are you having trouble with one app in particular?

Do you do it from your computer? Or phone?

You can do it either way.

Download Zedge from the Market. It makes setting ringtones and notifications a lot easier.
  8. 1) in settings under sounds pick your ringtone for the phone,
    2) in settings under sounds pick your ringtone for notifications
    3) open your gmail mail app and on the phone lower left corner press the button next to home and you will see settings for your mail .this is where you pick your sound for email notifications.hope this helps.

I've had my Vortex for nearly a year, and it's recently stopped playing the notification sounds that I've set. Regardless of what I set within an app, my phone will only play the default sound.

i'm really liking my samsung skyrocket, but the difficulty in assigning unique alerts to phone, email and texts is a real buzz kill. i just downloaded airdroid and when a link is received on my phone, it uses the same alert as my text messages. there is no option on the airdroid app for a unique alert or to silence it.

this is a google app! wouldn't you think they'd know their users want these options?

i'm really enjoying the ability to customize my phone after 2 years with the iphone OS, but having the option to download so many ringtones etc and being limited by this default design is frustrating.

i know i am not alone. i have seen so many posts concerning this online. i have been in and out of the settings too many times to count. i think i finally have it right, but man it was a headache.

i'm enjoying this challenge (arrrgh), but i do wonder how many users have been turned off by this a switched to another smart phone OS.

don't even get me started on the physical design of the phone.

all-in-all a very good phone, but with a few tweaks of the UI it could be great.
i'm not a techie like many in here. i am average user that makes up the bulk of the smart phone market.

i think i have figured this out...

    i have the skyrocket

for those not being able to assign unique alerts to the sms and email messages- the gmail app that is outside of the social hub app does not give an option to assign a ringtone, so it will piggy backing on the tone you choose for sms. however the one in the social hub does have that option. i am using both the stock email app and the same gmail account. i assigned them both the same tone. you then just go into the sms setting and choose a different setting. i just tested and i now have different alerts for sms and emails.

it seems that if you want to change the settings on the gmail or the sms, you want to work with the settings in the social hub app. but to be on the safe side i set the ringtone for my handcent sms in the social hub and on the home screen.

    i hope this helps.
