How to tell if phone is off w/o turning it on?

I just want to verify that my phone is off before bed, because I forget whether I've turned off my phone or whether it's just sleeping.

I pick up my phone, but I can't verify that it's turned off without unintentionally turning it on, because the only way to check that I know of is to press the power/sleep button. Unfortunately, that will turn on the phone if I've already turned it off, and therefore I have to wait as it boots up, then power it down.

Is there a way to verify that an Evo phone is turned off without turning it on in the process of verifying that it is off?

Listen for the CPU fan *j/k*

When i do a quick tap on the sleep button, it doesn't power on. I have to hold it for a second to turn it on. If it's already on, that quick tap brings up the lock screen.

Or install No Lock so you can use the volume buttons to wake the phone. If it doesn't wake then it's turned off.
