I'm trying to unroot my htc desire because i'm selling my desire on ebay so want it to be unrooted. I rooted my desire with Unrevoked about 8 months ago and don't know how to unroot the phone back to its factory state. I'm not a very advanced user but any help would be extremely helpfull??

Check the FAQs and guides (linked from "all about rooting" sticky post, which is the red link in my sig).

But basically you need a ROM Update Utility (RUU), which you download from Shipped ROMs. Note, that link is for GSM Desires - CDMA are phone model BravoC, which is a different link. This is a Windows program which you run with your phone connected via USB (in fastboot mode if you have changed your ROM). It will wipe your phone and load stock software.

You will need to find the RUU corresponding to your network. If you have trouble identifying it, let us know what you are looking for.

P.S. I know some of us (myself included) are getting on a bit, but normal sized text is still OK for most of us. ;)

I bought the phone unbranded from amazon and havn't changed the rom, I only rooted the phone to improve the battery life. Do I need to connect the phone via HTC Sync because at the moment my desire can't find htc sync on my computer.

I don't think you need HTC Sync, though you can download that from HTC anyway. If it doesn't detect the phone you can always put the phone into fastboot mode and run it that way.

If it's an unbranded GSM then you want a "WWE" RUU - most likely the one with the most recent software version.

You could also use the recent official Gingerbread upgrade, which is also an RUU.

Could I mount the phone as a disk drive then run the software and does the phone have to be in USB Debugging mode

    Just use fastboot

Do you mean put the phone into recovery mode then install the software.

Boot while holding the "volume down" key down. That takes you to the hboot screen. Wait a few seconds, then highlight "fastboot" and press the power key to select (which it tells you on the hboot screen).

sabk, Personally I wouldn't bother. Since you are rooted and S-Off, just flash Virtuous ROM 1.48 and you'll have Android 2.3.5, Sense 3.5 and lots of neat tweaks. Virtuous installation is very smooth and the ROM is very stable. So far, I have found that GPS reception much better. Previously I had trouble acquiring a signal. Now no trouble at all.
