You can check the actual signal not bars under settings, about phone, status. But if you don't have a benchmark from before it won't help. For me at my desk I am pretty much the same. -97db

I didn't pay too much attention to it, but when I checked the phone status page before the signal level was always around -85dBm, now it's around -51dBm in the same location (for the non nerds, that's a better signal - or at least a better signal indication).

Yeah I was checking it that way and with bars. But that method only shows you 1x signal only not 3G

I haven't been out of the house since I did the update, but here in my bedroom I have 3 bars of signal where I used to have only 1 bar.

I haven't noticed anything different. I still cannot use the market at my work, seems like anything with 3g doesn't work. It works perfect at my house, I never had any problems with the Incredible. I wonder if it is my X or is there something different with the X that makes this happen.

My 3G just kicked back in strong. Might have been a fluke or they might have been working on the network in my area. This phone has the same death grip as the iphone thou holding the phone sideways i get 71 dBm upright it goes up to -85dBm So if your getting slow data hold it sideways or like ol steve jobs say get a case lmao

I noticed at work my bars would jump from 1 up to 4 depending on how I was holding the phone and the direction I'd turn. After the update, it seemed at first much better, the jumping stopped and I was getting three bars.

However, after awhile it still seemed to still vary from 1-3 bars, but still no rapid changes. Prob has nothing to do w/ the update.

While, I voted "Better", it's really no different...

Damn, my signal actually got better.

Before at my desk I would get a constant -102. I'm sitting at -95 now, and when I move the phone around it picks up worse areas around my desk, office better. Some area at my desk can get to -120...lol

I might be able to get 3G at my desk now...lol

My signal strength is about the same, ranging in the -80s, but I have noticed that I generally have one or two more bars indicated on the home screen.

Aahhh I just tried it, u right...NO!!!!! lol.

The iPhone might can do a software fix for the issue then...lol But that would mean knocking off some of the phone's reception.

Everyone, try the iPhone 4 death grip and see if anything changes. If it does, Motorola needs to know ASAP.

Does anyone know for sure what the signal levels shown actually represent? The RF signal level is what it is at any location, no phone can change that. What can differ is how the phones process and work with the available signal. So if what is being reported is the actual 1X or 3G signal strength at that location then the phone should not be affecting that other than in how accurate of a reading it provides.

Ok, from what I seen so far, the decibels, bars do drop. I did lose service. But, service came right back if I continued holding it and the decibels starting going down. I think thats the Diversity Antenna at work.

EDIT: decibels started going higher when I continued holding it, yea Fab negative numbers. ...lol

Thats what I try to do. Use the decibels as a compass for finding bad reception areas and not as an indicator of phone antenna strength. But, this update did something. Either its reading the area better or the antenna had some extra power unlocked.

I hope you know that a -71dBm signal is better than a -85dBm signal. The higher, the better. Keep in mind these are negative numbers :D

Also, I think that the antennas are at the top and bottom of the device, so the "death grip" may actually be the proper way to hold it.

And on topic, I am experiencing about the same signal as before.

Aha! I just reread your post and it makes more sense now :)

Just thrown off when people say the signal went UP to -85 from -71 :p

Personally, I don't see that big of a difference when holding it upright vs. in landscape.
