Now that the G2 is out and running on HSPA+ is there any talk of the Slide being capable of it one day?

I currently get the HSPA 7.2 on a regular basis but would still enjoy the bump up.

Looking at the Frequency Bands both phones have the same listing of 850, 900, 1800, 1900 on GSM and 2100 on UTMS... so my guess is that it is purely software enabling the G2 of faster speeds.

It's just capable of HSPA. It isn't capable of the full potential HSPA+ speeds and I think that's a hardware issue. From the Slide User Guide:

Network HSPA/WCDMA:
 2100/AWS MHz
Upload speed of up to 2 Mbps and download speed of up to 7.2 Mbps Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
(Band frequency, HSPA availability, and data speed are operator dependent.)
