Is there any way of getting the HTC apps/widgets, such as the messaging widget, and the social networking widget on the droid?

the best (but not easiest) way is to copy the HTC incredible or another HTC device's ROM onto your device to get the sense UI. otherwise you will have to stick to android market apps like beautiful widgets to enable clock widgets that look similar to those on HTC devices

It's not easy at all. Not sure where they are now on porting the HTC Desire ROM over to the Droid, but that would be your only way to get the true HTC widgets. And you'd have to run the Sense UI, you couldn't use like HelixLauncher or anything.

It's the same on an HTC phone, if your not running sense you don't have access to the widgets. There are currently 2 developers that are working on porting sense to the Droid. They've come a long way and have gotten alot of the bugs worked out, that's not to say it is completely stable, you can't have 3G running and make phone calls at the same time and you will run into alot of FC's, but keep an eye on their progress, it shouldn't be too long until they have a completely usable ROM.

All we need for this treasure of a rom to work is the RIL which has been worked on for some time now, I believe they have to create the code from scratch unfortunately, so might take some time. RIL is basically what makes up for the actual phone part. But like stated earlier, at the moment only phone calls can be made when 3g is off. RIL should fix this, well hopefully. I personally am anxious for their rom, should be good.
