You can't watch avi's or wmv's directly. You have to convert them to mp4.

The player is in the Photos app.
Use Handbreak to convert, search for guides on Nexus One conversion.

I installed the free meridian player, and purchased the yxflash player fo $10. Yxflash handles most avi and some wmv files. They also fixed som sync problems i had with some of my mp4s.

I have an iPhone converter and it's highest setting looks to be 640x480 (480p)

Would that be OK for an HTC Desire?

You might want to try this app to handle your media too, Sync Android: doubleTwist Simply drag and drop your movies into the app and it will auto convert them.

Careful with converting video for the HTC Desire. It doesn't have the Xvid or DivX codecs (yet), so you'll have to make sure the video will be transcoded to H263 or H264, and audio in AAC of course.

I don't know what YouTube Downloader is, but if it just rips the videos from YouTube without transcoding then you should be fine.

The Desire plays videos in mp4 format, if the videos on your PC are mp4s then they'll work.

if you want to skip a step then get an app called 'freedi youtube' to download them directly onto your phone.

Any ipod/iphone conversion tool will generate mp4 files for you which will play fine on your Desire. I use "Videora" for the iphone 3GS (free) on standard settings and a typical conversion size for example is 550MB --> 360MB, or 350MB --> 240MB.

Quality is excellent IMO, and very easy to do. You can run a number of them at the same time and it will just queue them and convert them one after the other.

Videora iPod Converter - Free iPod Video Converter

Oh and yes they fill the screen on the standard settings.

I've just downloaded an wmv file and transferred it to my phone. It's not showing up in the Photos app though. Reading above seems to suggest that the Desire can't read wmv but how can this be true when the specs from HTC's own site states that it does? HTC - Products - HTC Desire - Specification

Just done some experimenting and this isn't correct. The phone will play wmv files from the photos app that comes with the phone. It doesn't play files wmv from the BBC iplayer that can be downloaded for portable devices though. I'm guessing because they are DRM'd although that does beg the question why the BBC bother to provide them and tell you to play a few seconds of them on your PC first to grab the licence then transfer them to your device when it doesn't work.

I've used this program for a couple of years now and it is great. However I have not used it for my desire as i am yet to put videos on it. I would use this program though as i have mever had a problem with it.

Was googling to find this out and came across this post - worked perfectly first time, no fiddling with settings need at all.

    Thanks!
