Because i bought my HTC Desire in Europe, it does not support North American bands. I live in Canada and currently using my HTC Desire (unlocked) on Rogers/Fido. My HTC Desire supposedly i believe can only do EDGE on Rogers/Fido and I've tried adding a data plan on it but the speeds resulted in 0.15 mb/s compared to my home WIFI or 3G at maximum 7.4 mb/s. I also find it really slow.

Is it justice to use an HTC Desire on such slow network? Its definately useable, just very very slow. Has anyone tried using an HTC Desire on EDGE? What are your speeds?

I'm currently not sure if i should keep the data plan or remove it. It seems like a very slow speed and hefty price of 35$ extra on top of my voice plan and not being able to get optimum speed (3G).

    Thanks for all your answers!

I live in a rural part of the UK. While I normally use the home WiFi to browse via the desire if my routers down I have to rely on edge. I must admit that while it is of course noticeably slower than WiFi, edge is still perfectly useable for browsing, sat nav and other web access required features.

would it be worth it to pay an extra 35$ for a speed of merely 0.15 mp/s?

What data plan costs $35? I personally wouldn't pay that much for EDGE data speeds. Maybe $5-10/mth for a bit of data.

Use opera mini browser as well. I find it pretty useful out in the country. It makes it lightning quick even for complex pages on G.

Canada has ridicoulous data plans. All the carriers offer 500mb for 30$, 1gb for 35$, 3gb for 65$, and 5 gb for 80$ ADD ON to your original voice plan. I personally hate the fact that its so expensive but without a data plan makes my desire sorta handicapped.

But the question is if its worth paying that much for a slow EDGE network....i mainly browse (on opera) on websites, and check mail. I dont use youtube with my desire because of the 1 gb cap is too less for youtube. ( 1 GB = 50 min of Youtube)

I also bought an European HTC Desire unlocked online and I'm using it on T-Mobile in the US. I can also only use EDGE due to the lack of North American 3G support. Nevertheless, I find my Desire perfectly usable. Granted, I have never used 3G and thus cannot compare, but while EDGE pales in comparison to WiFi, I find it pointless to have a smartphone without mobile access to the Internet.

In my case, I find it perfectly reasonable to have a data plan for my Desire, but only because T-Mobile offers an unlimited data plan for Android at 30 US$ per month. In your case, though, I probably would go at most for the 3GB plan. It should be enough for the occasional web browsing and Maps access (thankfully, Maps and Navigation work flawlessly here in the US).

Agreed. It also uses up a lot less data compared to the normal browser, in my experience.
