Hey folks, first post here and I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to Android phones, never had one and only used one briefly. I'm on an Orange UK contract and I'm due to upgrade next month. Should I go through Orange directly to get the HTC Desire, or go through the likes of Carphone Warehouse or Phones4U?

Also, I hear Orange are very slow rolling out updates for Android, which greatly upsets me - if I flash the ROM and install a custom build of Android with Sense built in, will I be able to restore the original ROM and as such not breach my warranty?

    Thanks for any help folks.

Go through whoever does the cheapest deal. I've spotted no discernable advantage to buying direct from Orange.

The Desire is very nice, an improvement on Hero. But one thing - it's still only on 2.1 as far as I'm aware, and 2.2 is now available, so God knows when Orange will update...

A few new Android phone are about to hit the market, not least the HTC Evo, it's really worth sitting down and searching google, something I wish I'd done back in October. If you take the Desire now will you regret it in a relatively short while. If you hang on will you get the Desire on a better, cheaper contact when the EVO is out, probably yes.

I know it's probably taboo round here but HTC are releasing the next generation of windows phones, something else to think about.

Orange have been slow with the 2.1 update, but to be fair HTC were behind too. Would that sway me? Perhaps, I'll probably get the best deal on a non branded phone in future, or if I can get a good deal on a branded I'll maybe take that, it's swings and roundabouts.

I wish I was looking round for a new phone...13months left on my contract!!

I'm 99.9% sure if you do flash a rom you can still restore your phone back to original factory settings.

    Good luck
    Al

I'm going to skip Windows Phone 7 Series for a year or two, until the platform matures and gains wider traction. I do like the look if it though, however I'm not big into the whole social networking thing so a lot of the features will be lost on me.

The HTC Evo doesn't interest me I'm afraid, being too large. What other Android phones are about to hit the market?

    Edited - cheers A1Dan.

Why don't you get the new iPhone 4?

    It looks good.

Strange thing to recommend in an Android forum. Not interested in the iPhone.
