Hi everyone. I picked up a Sprint HTC Hero the other day; I came from a Windows Mobile phone and can't believe I survived on that platform!

The only issue I am having is installing HTC Sync on my home desktop, which is running Vista Premium 64 bit. The software installed just fine on my XP machine at work, as well as my home laptop, which is also running Vista Premium 64 bit. Obviously the issue is with my specific desktop PC, but I'm stumped on what I need to do. I searched the forums and couldn't find anything about the scenario I am experiencing. Also, yes, I am closing all programs and turning off anti-virus when I attempt the install. Here's the deal - the install starts fine, but about halfway through I get a pop-up box that says:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'vcredist.msi' in the box below."

That msi is nowhere to be found on my machine... so I cancel out of that box and get the following error message:

"Error 1706. An installation package for the product Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'vcredist.msi'."

After that the install stops, saying it could not complete. Anybody else run into this or have any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem. And I've also installed the 2005 Visual C++ Redistribution. I had previously contacted HTC Tech Support (via email). They sent a script they wanted me to run and then send them the captured data. But this is a work system and I'm not allowed to run that script.

The information from the installation leads me to believe that the HTC installation should be posting the file because it is defaulting to a temporary folder for the 'vcredist.msi' file. The default/temp folder name is c:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\IXP001.TMP\

Is there any chance that the installation executable file (or its entire folder) needs to reside at the root directory of the drive? I haven't tried that.

    I'd love to know that.

I failed to mention, I have the HTC DROID ERIS...not the same phone as you. Based on other postings I've read, I'm sure it's specific to our Windows-based system.

A new version of sync came out a week ago, try it and see if it works.

50 MB of available free hard disk space
    USB 2.0 is required

    2. Software Requirements - Supported Operating Systems (PC)

I there another site I am missing somewhere?

On edit: I see what you are talking about now, that is for the European market Hero, it is not available on the U.S. site, and wouldn't want to try it since the phones are different systems.

And this is the response to my question about working on Win 7 support that I received 1/18/10 (somehow did not include this in the other post):

    [FONT=&quot]Dear Bruce,

Unfortunately, we do not have anything for HTC Sync regarding Windows 7. I apologize for this inconvenience.

I'll let somebody else be the guinea pig on that one! 2.0.18 was written for the European Hero, there are differences in the phones and I would not want to take the chance, this thing is my mobile office.

I give up... I tried the newest version 2.0.18 and still had the same issue. Irritating that nobody at HTC seems to have an answer, but I'll just sync with another machine.

No other sync apps, yes Windows is up to date.

I don't really NEED to sync with this PC, so I'm OK with giving up at this point, and figure out other things to waste my time with. :)

Tried installing the HTC USB driver on my XP machine - got the vcredist.msi not found error, towards the end of the installation.

which means you needa a VC++2005 runtime distribution (.msi) file, which can be found on the Microsoft site.

    1) Download the "vcredist_x86.exe" file (from either one of the links below, the sp1 version worked for me) into a temp folder.
    2) Use winzip to extract it to the same temp folder, creates "VCREDI~3.EXE" file
    3) Use winzip to then open this VCREDI~3.EXE file again and extract it to the same temp folder, it creates "vcredist.msi" file and another .cab file.
    4) Run the above HTC USB driver install again, when the error shows up, point it to this .msi file & the install completes.....good luck !!
