Now I have a question. I don't mean to flame anyone.

Everyone who is bitching about not getting froyo yet, why do you care so much? Sure its the latest and greatest, but what signifigant improvements are you expecting from a .1 release upgrade? Now I understand a lot of you have GPS problems so a fix is understandably desired. I've personally have never had a GPS issue with the vibrant so that need is lost on me.

Sure our phones will get a big performance increase with froyo, but is your 1ghz Hummingbird with half a gig of memory on 2.1 really slow? Was it really slow without the lag fix? I installed the lag fix the other day for shits and giggles out of simple curiousity (not need) and apart from a minor increase in the snappiness of the device (which was a great performer anyway in my experience) and an inflated quadrant score I see no significant difference.

We are talking about phones right? At what point does a phone need multiple cores? Is it just for bragging rights? Did you buy the phone for the ability to say "My phone is faster than yours." "My phone has a newer OS than yours." "I have the best phone on the market!"? Do you expect to be supercomputing on your device? How much power does a phone need anyway? Do you really need a beowulf cluster in your pocket?

In my opinion, the froyo upgrade has only minor additional features and none that truly are dealbreakers to not have. And if I really want a feature I'll find another way. I wanted wifi tethering, so I rooted and installed Barnacle. I wanted the enhanced voice command features so I installed vlingo. I wanted a more stock interface so I installed launcherpro.

I find the only thing that annoys me about the lack of froyo is occasionally there is an app I read about that runs only on froyo that I would like to try. But in the end, its just an app. And usually its just for entertainment. Boohoo, poor me. I get over it quickly.

I find that the vibrant is a great machine with 2.1 and a few mods. Its a great device with a great camera, brilliant screen, great performance, and plenty of storage even before my sd was added.

I just wonder why everyone wants it froyo so badly. Are you honestly completely unhappy with what is arguably one of the best phones on the market, just because of a point release upgrade? The gps fix is valid but what about the rest?

Is it so difficult to just be happy with a great performing phone? I love my vibrant. Its a quantum leap from the G1 which I had previously. I know I want the upgrade to froyo but if it takes a while to get, I can deal.

In the interest of full disclosure, I paid full price for mine. No bargain hunting. Straight up paid $499 plus tax for it and I couldn't be happier with it.

I just don't get the hate.

I havent been here in a couple months or so, and I was hoping that there would be a GPS fix at least by now. I dont use it often, but when I do, I prefer to have it work rather than not work. As for Froyo, I couldnt care less to be honest. When it is released, great. Until then, it works otherwise just fine. But this GPS issue... For it to not be fixed STILL, is absolutely unacceptable.

I agree with the OP, its like buying a PC with XP and then being Pissed when Windows 7 came out, you didnt buy the PC thinking you would be OWED Windows 7. Noone promised you FROYO, so I dont get all the hubbub either. Its really not that much of a diffrence.

I havent complained on these forums about Froyo , I've just been waiting patiently. But what i am upset about is Samsung or T-mobile keeping their promise. To me its the principle of telling consumers a phone will have this by this time and going through with it. I know they never said the vibrant would be updated in September but even T-mobile UK flaked out on I9K users yesterday. Like you I came from a G1 so this is my second smartphone and all i can say is WOW. I absolutely love this phone, I've never had a problem with lag whatsoever, I've used the lagfix and the only difference is in quadrant scores. The only problem i DO have though is that my GPS does not work AT ALL. I've tried every single fix out there and not one single GPS fix. I'm not gonna bitch about it though, as long as Samsung and T-mobile deliver THIS YEAR then ill be content. I think people are upset because the phone doesn't work as advertised and it is a MAIN feature in a smartphone. This is just my 2 cents people i hope i don't piss anyone off :D

yea kinda went off topic there.....I think Froyo is a minor update, but Samsung said ALL Galaxy S devices would recieve Froyo which has been out since what? May? The phones should have came with Froyo out of the box, but o well. Samsung sticking to their word is all i'm interested in, not Froyo.

    This is my reasoning.

Why does it take a 3rd party developer to FIX a phone?

Why cant Samsung fix it already?

Why do we have to keep waiting, while theres devs out there making the phone better for those who clearly have bad experiences with the phone?

We clearly need updates, and Froyo aswell, for it will make our phones perform better.

We paid for the best thing out there, and it cant even play flash yet.

While other devices a year older, already can.

To those who argue "the phone should have come with 2.2" you need to understand something. When a videogame developer is creating a game they use a game engine. Lets say theyre using unreal engine 2.0. A typical modern game takes about 3 years to develop. Lets say in the beginning they start designing it with the unreal engine 2.0 and two thirds of the way through unreal engine 3.0 comes out. its not as easy as going ''alright just slap 3.0 in there''

I have no idea how long the SGSV was in development but i gurantee that when they started working on it 2.1 was all that was out. and they designed their different processor to run 2.1 optimally (mind you most android phones have been running and arm8 or snapdragon or similar texas instruments processor). so please cut the BS with the ''it should have launched with 2.2'' its not that easy.

All I've ever seen are rumors about froyo's release date and never anything concrete. So people pissed that froyo isn't released yet surprises me.

I have to side with ghost on the "It should have been released with 2.2". Operating systems on phones aren't the same as operating systems on PC's. There's driver issues to deal with and optimization that needs to happen before it is released to the public. Having worked with programmers and in the computer field for years, I know companies miss deadlines. Its just a fact of life.

If you as a user hate a company like Samsung or whoever, because you got burned (think you got burned) over a software update, why would you patronize them again? Not buying a companies product hits them harder and effects the company more directly than buying a product and complaining about it online. They already have your money, so why care?

I understand the aggravation about non-working GPS, and frankly I'd be pissed too if I needed it badly and it didn't work. But then again, in my book gps on a phone is more a novelty than a requirement. If I need perfect GPS, I'll buy a dedicated unit. In my book there's too many variables in cell phone navigation systems to rely on them 100 percent. But thats my view and I'm not trying to upset anyone.

Truth be told, the only thing I ever used my gps for on my G1 was geocaching. Though with the Vibrants capabilities if I need to rent a car I may forgo the garmin option and use the phone. May.

Truthfully, gps is kinda a miracle it works at all. GPS recievers do the equivalent of detecting a 50watt light bulb in california, from New York, while there are thousands of lights flashing in your direct line of sight. Interesting trivia, the clocks on GPS satellites have to be adjusted everyday or their accuracy goes off by 2 miles because time in space runs differently than it does on earth, basically it gains a sixth of a second everyday because time runs faster the further you are from a large object with significant gravit. Thanks to einstein for the theory of relativity.

Wow, really went off topic for a sec. But the point is your phone, in your pocket does this as well as everything else including calls, cloud syncing, text messages, net surfing, movie watching, playing mp3's, streaming audio, connecting to bluetooth headsets for wireless communication, and people are surprised because the gps is not working? I'm kinda still surprised it works at all.

Interesting responses here so far. Look forward to hearing more.

Just a thought. You do realize that the devices that are a year older have had a year more development time to get it working right? Not trying to bust on you but you do see the logic of what I'm saying right? Also stock the phones perform pretty good as well, sure touchwiz was slower and ugly but thats why I tossed it for launcherpro. I don't think we "need" froyo. The word that is more appropriate I think is "want". Need means something different. You need water, you want beer.

Not trying to diss you but you seemed like you missed something.

Well, not nearly like your Windows analogy. It's more like buying a PC with XP SP1 and bitching because SP2 is not out yet. The difference between 2.1 and 2.2 is probably even less significant than a Service Pack upgrade.

One thing you will learn quickly around here, many people love to bitch and whine about every perceived fault they can find. Heck they even bitch about things that are not faults... Like where's the FM radio?

Thats how companies make their money, they capitalize on people's incessant bitching and whining and deliver them what they want, but leave a little out so they'll bitch and whine some more and buy the next thing...so in a way bitchers and whiners are good =D

A quick question would be a few sentences at most. Your title was nondescriptive and misleading. you should be more descriptive next time.

OK, let me dip in this discussion.

First off, I know a lot of people here said they hope they don't piss anyone off......me, I could care less if I do piss you off. In fact, I hope I do:D

Now, as far as "froyo": I couldn't agree more with the OP and ghost. All this is to me basically is a bunch of kids wanting to get the latest trend and brag about it to everyone, PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Do we "really" need froyo?, no. Will froyo "really make our phones that much better as opposed to eclair?, no. After extensive reading about people bitching and whining like 4 year olds because they don't have the "latest and greatest technology", it really makes me wonder how bad the media has everyone brainwashed.

Personally, I have never had any problem with my vibrant since the day I got it; going from stock, to Eugene's and bionix's roms. I have never had any problem with my GPS, no lag issues whatso ever, or any other problems that people are crying about. So what is it exactly that you want? A lightning fast phone that has every aspect of it top notch? Well guess what, this is technology and there's no such thing. I mean after all....no one put a gun to your head and forced you to buy this phone.

I love my Vibrant and I can care less about froyo or how ever long I have to wait to get it. I mean what...."cause it supports flash 10.1", WHOOOPTEEE DOOOO.

And by the way melll: 3rd party developers "haven't" fixed the Vibrants or the issues, they just slightly improved them and modded them in their own way for other people.......eh:rolleyes:

So just because your phone is working perfectly fine, then everyone else must not complain about the issues they are having on their phone?

Great to hear you're all very happy and that you think you're the only one in the universe with a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant.

No not at all, I'm just saying that myself as well as others that have posted haven't had these problems. I'm not doubting there are other people who are having problems and I know it's very frustrating; especially since I had a Behold II before this one. If you go in the Behold II section on this forum, you'll see tons of my posts ranting and raving about it (with 1,000's of others mind you). Other than certain people having problems with GPS or lag, there is nothing wrong with this phone in general. I just believe that most Vibrant owners (the ones that are crying like babies) just want to get the froyo update because it's newer.

And just for shits and giggles, let's say that when they release the froyo update, the GPS still doesn't work. What is everyone gonna say? "Oh well damn, the GPS still isn't fixed but at least I got froyo now. Oh well I don't really need or use the stupid GPS anyway. It's not like I need this GPS to tell me how to get to McDonalds around the corner from here"

    You go DJ!

I hope some bonehead doesn't think Froyo is going to fix their GPS. Froyo will likely have no effect on GPS. The GPS fix will be software/firmware update from Samsung I believe.

Actually they did promise us Froyo. The thing they never promised us was Gingerbread.

Because I want to get a feel for the competition better. This is my first smartphone and I got it about a couple weeks ago. Sadly, I'm a little dissapointed. Although there are many more things I can do with this phone coming from the lg Dare, there are still things that really bother me. For example, The web browser shuts off on me alot. I can understand that nothings perfect and will fail once and awhile, but when I have to reopen the browser four times in the same sitting just to get access to one page, its pretty annoying. And it's not the sites I'm going to because this happens pretty often. Theres also a pretty noticeable lag. This was something I was really looking forward to getting rid of with the dare, and it would make texting take much longer. There are times where I just used to task killer to close out all the apps, and then I go to message and there's still a lag with it. On top of that, I find the bottom four keys to be extremely unresponsive at times.

I don't know, maybe it's just my phone, but hearing as 2.2 is supposed to increase performance, I'm really eager to see what it has to offer before jumphing ship and getting a new phone. It's kind of hard with the g3 right there.

It sounds like you just got the phone so you should be able to exchange it. Clearly your phone has some glitch(es) so you may want to consider an exchange. I use the Web a lot with a variety of Websites and to date no such issue.

As for the G2, well... You be the judge:

    Do yourself a favor:
    1. Never use a task killer; they do more harm than good on Android phones (at least the newer ones).
    2. Use a different browser like Dolphin, skyfire, or xscope.
    3. Root your phone and remove the bloatware (you'll thank me later)
    4. Flash your phone to a custom rom or a leaked rom.
Custom roms: Bionix roms or Eugene's roms (Bionix's roms are lightning fast)
Leaked roms: JI2-JI6 (all of them are good)
    5. If you do flash to a custom or leaked rom; don't use the voodoo kernel lagfix as it is more for advanced users and you are new to the smartphone community (WELCOME:D)

Another suggestion is before you do any of this, go to the XDA Vibrant forum and do a little research (again you'll thank me later). Here's the link to get you started xda-forums
