I have to ask anyhow. Im tired of lag, and battery life etc. I had the silent bug issue and got a refurb from verizon. Phone seems "ok" but i want it to be awesome. When i got the refurb, it came ready to do 2.1 ota update and i did. I am new to all this. So my question is, can i root with 2.1 on phone? Or really, i wanna ask... what is the best thing i can do to optimize my phone? like i said im new, but can follow instructions and kinda good with computers etc. Please let me know whats the best thing i can do to get the most out of my phone... thanks in advance.

yes you can root if you installed the 2.1 OTA

if you want it to perform better and can do it, root it, get a fast rom on it, overclock, etc etc, you will be good to go.

if you have the 2.1 and your hboot is not 1.49 then you can root............ its the same process as rooting 1.5

it is the same as the instructions to root 1.5...the OTA does not affect the root process.

When ive seen people post a question like this before, the answer is usually go read the sticky. Ive read the stickies, im not dumb, and im not really lookin for someone to hold my hand, but i know i need help. Ill keep readin about it, but if anyone that has rooted or any of the stuff and happens to be in the milwaukee area, hit me up ;)

aloysius and evile eris are what i use regularly.

checkout the root section here and the eris dev section on xda developers.

If you're new, need handholding, kinda good with computers and may need local help I don't know if your the best root candidate. If the silent bug issue has been resolved with the refurb and you just want a great Eris experience try this:
    1. Keep your text mesage archive to a minimum
    2. Install and use the apps you need but no more
    3. Contemplate the need for constantly updating widgets
    4. Dump any task killers
With moderate use, you should be able to go 2 days between charges.

I do see where coming from, but slightly disagree. I'm new, needed a little bit of handholding (as far as answering questions when I was stuck), and I'm GREAT with computers (not will cell phone programming though) and I rooted

Needless to say, it wasn't that hard, and like everyone says, if you follow directions, it's virtually nonexistent to screw it up. Almost EVERY problem with it has been presented on here somewhere, and 99 percent of those problems have been fixed, with the solution either here, the xda website, or the IRC chatrooms. Thats the beauty of it. The community here is so awesome that even someone new can root.

Cablenguynoe told me that I wouldn't know what rooting truly is and I wouldn't know how much I would like it until I rooted and MAN does it make a world of difference. You can customize your phone better, use wifi tethering, and overclock to preform much better. I'm running Alyoisus V12, and its pretty BA.

My advice, if you decided to root, is to go to the 1.5-2.1 guide on the root subform and just READ. Read everyones posts, problems, and solutions. And any thread that says "I think I have a major problem", "I think I just bricked my headset", "Anyone want to help a poor guy/girl root?"... Read those. Then, when you decide to root and you do run into problems, you will remember reading it and know exactly where to go to find help :)
