Question about sounds in Android from an ex-iPhone user.

One thing I really enjoyed about the iPhone was if I flipped the "silent" switch, I knew that no app would make noise. That's an absolutely critical feature for me, otherwise I'm inclined to not use my phone as much because I'm worried it'll blare some inappropriate noise at some weird time.

Thinking that Android phones would behave the same way, I set my Droid X on Vibrate and went about using my phone fairly late when my girlfriend was on the couch next to me sleeping. I launched the Urbanspoon app, and what does it do but make it's loud and ridiculous sounds.

Queue girlfriend jumping a mile, startled.

How can I get my phone to tell all of the apps to shut the hell up and not use the external speaker without rabidly checking for settings on each individual app?

There's a free widget called AudioManager that has different sounds for Media, Ringer, System, etc. It's not quite as easy as flipping a switch but all the controls are there

Great, thanks. I'll give that a try.

Yeah there's a different volume control for media that the ringer volume won't control. Audio Manager would be the best bet, IMO. Very easy to use and gives you quick access to everything :)

There is a app in the market called mute that will mute all on touch.

BTW, gotta love the "I'm worried it'll blare some inappropriate noise at some weird time."

Im sure the "urban spoon" app is why you want to mute your phone from your sleeping gf.

Mute was the ticket. Thanks. That's exactly what I was looking for.

To be honest, I think it's a glaring oversight that there's no built-in way to stop the actual phone itself from making noise without adjusting several sliders (or using a third party app). Apple got it right: the silence switch silences everything in the phone, but still lets the headphone jack be active.

Oh, and I'm not entirely sure I see the point of porn on a screen this size :p.

Wait a sec. You said in the 1st post it was on Vibrate. There is a Silent mode on the X as well. I haven't used it yet, so can't say if what you had happen would still occur. Test the Silent mode if you haven't done so already. (One was is in settings, one is thru the Widget Locker app's swipes, and another is holding the power button and selecting it). I have email/text set to Vibrate when phone is on vibrate, so no audible sounds. Shockingly, on Vibrate, Media will still come thru, as you saw.
