I think I got a dudSupport

Thought I would register for the forum and let everyone know my experience, in case someone else comes across the same issues.

My Photon had died on me numerous times today. In order to get it to turn back on I have to take the battery out and put it back in. Then it takes awhile, but if you hold down the power button it turns on.

It got progressively worse throughout the day and now I just let the phone sit and it will just go black with the same issue.

Definitely will be bringing it in tomorrow.

Thats really strange for a phone to be doing that.

I read about this same thing happening to quite a few people already. A brand new phone shouldn't be shutting off for no reason.

Lemons happen with anything mass produced, regardless of make, model or even product type.

We've probably all been there (I sure have), sorry it happened to you.

Wishing you many good lucks on your replacement! :)

I concur. Go back and look at all the complaints about the EVO, the EVO 3D, Droid X, Droid Incredible, Samsung Epic...the list goes on and on. There are many people that end up getting a dud.

Just like EarlyMon said, hope your replacement is better.

I'm having issues with mine too. Other than a problem with apps not seeing saved backups on my SD (I have a seperate thread on that), I'll have severe lag at times, where it will take as much as 30 seconds to do something when I click a widget or button in an app.

I also have had multple instances where the keyboard won't work. I type and just no letters appear (but they are highlighted and I get the haptic feedback when I hit the keyboard like normal). I've also been unable to switch keyboards at times. When I select the new keyboard then click a text entry area the little text selection bar appears, but no keyboard ever does.

I've also been intermittently unable to add widgets to my screens. I long press, pull up the widget menu, select my widget.... then nothing. I get the haptic feedback as usual for each step.

I don't doubt you have a dud. I had an issue when I picked mine up on Sunday from the local Sprint corporate store. The phone in the box did not match the box for all the numbers. The phone that belonged in my box was found in New York, and I'm in Houston. So some random Photon in New York was activated on my account. It took the staff at the store nearly an hour and a half to find the problem and then clear it all out of the the system. So if Moto can put the wrong phone in the wrong box then yea you probably have a dud.

    Whoa, what a mess!

The top three lines of defense in Android when things are this borked:

    • Pull the battery for a full minute - clears any stuck logic states in the hardware
    • Factory data reset - clears out everything, tends to clean up tangled cache areas, one of the big problems in software
    • Return to store for a replacement
    Take them in that order.

Many people hate the factory data reset because it will lose settings and such. But that's no more than what you'll lose living with a bad phone anyway or getting it replaced.

Life's too short to deal with a bad phone - in your shoes, I'd take the full measures for total happiness within your 30 day window.

My wife brought my phone back today while I was at work and got a replacement. Seems to be working just fine.

    I've done the battery pull.

Like everyone else, I am dreading the factory reset, so I'm gonna give it a day or two to see if the Moto-faries visit me in the middle of the night to fix my phone. Or that someone will figure out a fix.

    I'm not hopeful, though. :(

Woops, so that was you. Sorry.
    :D

    i kid.

But that's the first time I've heard of that. I wonder if this happens more often than not.

Yeah, so... when I said 30 seconds, I was really trying not to exagerate how long the lag was. Well, I just went outside for a smoke, and tried to do somethig when I was outside. Of course nothing happened. Then a full 5 minutes later when I went back to my desk, I had a little flurry of activity where it started doing all the things I tried to do when I was outside. LOL

Hard reset HERE I COME!! *sigh*

You might want to take some rubbing alcohol and q-tip and try cleaning the metal connectors on the battery and phone port. It could be that during manufacturing maybe something got stuck on the ports...make sure it dries though and perhaps that's what's causing it to power off within a short period of time. Lithium Ion batteries can be wonky like that.

Was that reply meant for someone else? Cause none of the issues I have been having had anything to do with powering on or off.

I dunno if it is a Motorola thing or part of 2.3.4, but apps and many settings are now backed up automatically. It's not perfect, but there is so much less you need to redo after the factory reset.

With a little planning, you should be able to get up and running very quickly and easily after the reset.

Now, if only it had actually fixed my problems :(

I know I pretty much took the thread over with my issues. I hope OP is doin better than me tho. I'm pretty sure I'm goin in for a replacement after work.

I'm doing great! Best Buy just gave me a new phone, no problem.

As long as you're within your 30 day (or 45 day for silver rewards members) exchange/return window, I can confirm that Best Buy is absolutely AWESOME about this, which is part of the reason I continue to upgrade my phones there, rather than directly through Sprint or through any of the other 3rd party retailers. Once the rep sees the issue, they don't even ask too many questions, they just go to see if they have more in stock and replace it. Only drawback is they normally require you to bring back all the original packaging and accessories (which can be a hassle if you forget it at home).

I had 2 returns (well, 3 exchanges in total, since I ended up getting a white EVO in the end) with the EVO. 1st return was because of the stupid double update release that bricked a lot of people's phones. 2nd return was because the new replacement had a bug where the screen was not responding to touch at all (couldn't unlock my screen...LOL...or it would always take me a few swipes until it finally reacted).

I was very lucky with my Evo and held my launch day unit right until I traded it in for the Photon, but I did have a few Palm Pre exchanges, which I did at Sprint stores. I had no problems doing it with them. Never had to return the original packaging.

Two were immediate in store exchanges, and the other they had to order the new phone, but I got to hold the old one until it arrived at the store, then just went in for the exchange.

I am hoping it will be that easy for me this time. I've been learning how to "cause" a couple of my problems, so hopefully when I'm there I can show them what they are, instead of playing luck of the draw, hoping to be there when the problem happens to be apparent.

Did they actually give you "new" phones at Sprint or a refurbished?
  22. wubbie075

Only one was refurbished, and I only had that one for a week.

Got my replacement at the Sprint Store yesterday. So far so good. None of the problems I was having have shown up yet, but I won't feel entirely comfortable for a few days.

It was definitely a new phone, not refurbished. She took it out of the box right in front of me.

Nice. Good stuff. Sounds like that'll be another plus of the MoPho not being as "popular" as other phones. Lots of units in stock!...hahahaha

Although, hopefully, there are more of us that are happy with the phone and won't experience the same issues that people have been having.
