I ran the pre kitchen diagnostic and got a red x on java. How will this affect rooting and such??

I believe it means if you plan on doing any signing it will not work. You should be fine.

if you're creating update.zip files that can be flashed to your phone or to other peoples phones... frankly, if you were at that stage you'd know how to do it the manual way already.. if you just want to get the phone rooted.. then ignore the Java box.. just read the guide stickied in this forum and you'll be good to go.... if the pre-kitchen doesn't work for you, then don't freak out..just follow the manual steps in the guide and copy/paste the commands.. it works perfectly

remember to make a nandroid backup after rooting and before flashing any custom ROMs..

disclaimer: If you brick your phone (highly unlikely) it's not my fault. You are responsible for anything you do to your phone
