Luke Aikins (born November 23, 1973)[3] is an American professional skydiver, pilot, and prominent member of an elite team of skydivers, BASE jumpers, and paraglider pilots who explore and advocate the possibilities of human flight (known as the Red Bull Air Force). In 2012, he was one of the eminent figures who helped skydiver, Felix Baumgartner, jump from a hot air balloon in the stratosphere of 120,000 feet.[4][5]

Aikins also teaches skydiving; he has coached NASCAR's Brian Vickers and routinely advised the military on cutting-edge skydiving techniques. He is also an expert aerial photographer and his photos have been published in major magazines and newspapers.[3] He has completed more 18,000 jumps since he started skydiving at the age of 12 years old.[6]

He became the first man in world history to dive from mid-tropospheric altitude and land safely without a parachute or a wing suit.[7]

Born into a family dynasty of BASE jumpers and skydivers, Aikins has contributed to the family legacy with three world records. He is a consultant for skydiving products, parachute configuration, and an innovator in pivotal optimal flight postures. Luke is on staff at Skydive Kapowsin of Tacoma, Washington which is owned by his family. He has coached an array of people from different backgrounds, including the United States Navy Seals to NASCAR drivers. He is also a safety and training advisor for the United States Parachute Association.[8]

Luke Aikins is an expert at the precision skydiving discipline of swooping; he is one of the pioneers of combining a canopy with skis to fly vertically down mountain sides; and he is an adept BASE jumper and airplane pilot.[citation needed] All of that experience comes into play in Luke's role as a member of the Red Bull Air Force[9].
