There is a link on the OTA Update site for ICS for the A1:
    http://download.lenovo.com/slates/a1/ICS_OTA/

No file in there yet though. I read that you will not be able to install the update from "System Updates in the settings menu, but you will have to download and install the update manually. When the ICS update is coming for us, who knows, but it's a good sign the have the directory on their OTA website.

I downloaded the ICS update that occasionally shows on the above website. Tried installing it, but the .zip file must not be complete as it will not install properly. I did find an ICS update on another website that works wonderfully though. It is not an official upgrade though:
    Download ICS-ROM: http://sdrv.ms/JYFPao (it's file "ISC1.2")

hey emorrison33 - i downloaded the file and unpacked it, but could you tell me how to install? no worries if it's too much of a hassle.

how has your experience with it been? are there any limitations or restrictions that you can tell? i watched the youtube clip of ics on the a1 and there didn't appear to be any or too much lag - your thoughts?

    thanks again.

zombie, you do not need to unpack the file. Just save the .zip file to your tablet (I think it defaults to the Download Folder. Then copy and paste the file into your \sdcard folder. Then rename the file to update.zip. The A1 comes with ES File Exlorer app, and you can use this to copy, paste and rename. Then you need to power off the device. Press and hold the power button and the volume up button (on the side of the tablet). You will see the Lenovo logo flash, and then the device will power off. Do the same thing again, and you will see the Lenovo logo again, then the screen will go blank, and then maybe 10 seconds later you will see the Lenovo logo again. After that you will see the Android "robot" and a file folder with an arrow coming out of it. Let go of the buttons at this point. It will install ICS and power off. Then press and hold the power button as normal to start up the tablet. It may take awhile to boot up into ICS at first, just be patient. Post on here if you have any problems and I will try and help.

I haven't had any major issues at all. Once, the speaker started freaking out and making weird noises, but I shut down and restarted and never had that happen again. The only thing I am unhappy about is Flash Support. I read comics through Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited. It uses Flash. None of the browsers I have used work correctly with this website. I know ICS has had issues with Flash but I thought it was fixed in the last Flash update. I read from other forums you need to use either the "stock" ICS browser, Dolphin HD or Opera, for Flash, but none of them work for me.

thanks for the help! one problem: i followed all of the steps - however, the android and file folder never appeared. i powered down. held power and vol+ - "lenovo" flashed on the screen. repeated - but, no android.

    any ideas?

actually, i take it back. got to the screen you described. let go of the buttons. nothing happened. eventually i turned it back on and no changes had been made. maybe i copied the zip to the wrong file - but, i copied it to "removable sd". any thoughts?

    the options i get are:
    a) reboot system now
    b) wipe data
    c) wipe cache
    d) touch calibration

should there be something about ics or installation, etc.?

    thanks for bearing with me.

It sounds like you don't have the Update.zip file in the proper place. The file path should be \sdcard . Make sure you have the downloaded .zip file renamed to Update.zip. Once you have that installed, you can do an over the air update (System Settings, About Tablet, System Updates) and it will install the Lenovo ICS upgradde onto the tablet.

thanks for all the help. i'm getting better results now that it's just under the file path \sdcard.- but, i wonder if i'm being impatient. the android page came up - with a slightly longer loading bar at the bottom of the screen. shortly thereafter the bar was replaced with an exclamation point and the prompt with the four options i listed above. i chose to reboot. now i've been getting the lenovo introduction repeatedly for some time now. i hope this is the installation.

scratch what i said - rebooting again and will try to update through the system settings. i'll, of course, get back to you.

famouszombie, did you download the ICS update from the lenovo OTA website? Or from this link: http://sdrv.ms/JYFPao If it was the former, the update does not work. You have to apply the ICS 1.2 update first and then use the system update from your tablet to apply the Lenovo update. Unfortuantely it sounds like you are trying to apply the Lenovo update and you sort of bricked the phone. You'll need to download one of the updates from the lenovo website: Index of /124795/slates/a1/OTA the _2643_US.zip and copy it onto an external SDCard. This will get you back into an Android OS so you can use the phone again. Then download the ICS 1.2 .zip file , run the update as before with the Power/volume buttons and you will have ICS installed. Then you can use the Lenovo ICS OTA over the air update.

i did get it from the link you posted - but, yes, i'm having some problems now. feeling a little dumb. it's stuck on the loading page when you initially turn it on.

hmm - did i do the order of operations wrong? should i have gone through system updates first then tried the power/vol+ combination?

If your getting the exclamation point the install is failing for some reason. But the order would be, download the ICS 1.2 upgrade. Change the name to update.zip and put in file path \sdcard. Power off. Press and hold the power button and the volume up button at the same time. Lenovo logo shows, then device powers off. Repeat button sequence until the android guy shows. Device updates and shuts off. Then turn it back on and the device will boot into ICS eventually (takes 10 minutes, maybe less). I noticed in another forum that someone mentioned clearing the data from the device before trying to use the ICS 1.2 update. And then again before the over the air upgrade. At this point, if you have an external mini SDCard you can slide into the bottom of the tablet, I would redo your original installation and start over. Copy the 2643 file, using a laptop, onto your SDCARD and rename the file update.zip. Then power on the device again, with the power button and volume + button and hopefully it will re-install the Android 2.3.4 version. I was successful with this when I made the mistake of trying to use the Lenevo ICS update before the ICS 1.2 version.

So my advice would be, get the device back running 2.3.4 Gingerbread. Once that is up and running, remove the min external SD card. And remove the update.zip file you renamed from the ICS 1.2 file. Just move it to another folder for now. Then power down. Use the power/vol + combo to get into the "options" menu and wipe cache and wipe data (you'll lose all your apps and files though, so you may want to back-up what you need to save.). Then shut down and reboot. Then after your in Android again, move the update.zip file back to the internal \SDCARD folder. Power down and try the upgrade again. After that, I can't be of much help anymore. Maybe someone else will chime in to this thread if you are unsuccessful.

so, i think i understand - in fact fairly confident (!!!). just one thing: am i able to transfer the 2643 file from my comp to the external sd with the sd in the a1 tablet via usb OR do i need to get it onto the sd card first, THEN insert it?

thanks for being patient with me!

I don't about the USB through the computer. I copied it onto the SD card from my laptop. It has an SD Card slot.

I did the update, and now hung at the "android" logo. Tried to reset factory, but failed.

    Any ideas????

For me the procedure worked almost as you described. I've tried with the one from lenovo first and A1 froze on on initial ANDROID label (instead of lenovo loader). I didn't go back to 2.3.4 though. I retried with the ICS1.2 file straight ahead and it worked and updated OTA. It looks pretty wierd for me. Why it is like this? Why lenovo does not support this file and finally what is in the ICS1.2 file? Who created it? Lenovo?

Hey, I found the link dead, so I searched online and found that the following link/web page provided a detailed instruction (complete with screen caps) on step-by-step instructions to upgrade the lenovo a1 (my tablet) from 2.3 gingerbread to ics 4.0.4. You can also give it a try, it worked for me, so i thought I'd share my resource with you. oops.. here's the link (almost forgot). http://gleescape.com/?p=554
