Uninstall HTC sync and install PDAnet.
    Here: PdaNet for Android download
and you can use any method.
    The method I used was:

    1. Start loop

    2. Shut down the phone

    3. Unclick the card

    4. Volume down + Power into bootloader

    5. Start recovery and wait 1 - 2 seconds after you here the disconnect sound to click in your card and make sure you do it before the black screen.

    6. You should see error device not found change to the other message.

This gets me into adb everytime with any sd card or computer.

    Hope this helps

What is the point of having pdanet? Do i need it to be running on the desktop? Should i uninstal htc sync AND the htc sync drivers or just Htc sync?

the USB driver is different, and may work for some people better than the other USB drivers.

The driver that comes with unrevoked2 should also work. I would try both before giving up if i wasn't already rooted.

I had PDANet installed when i was doing mine as well. Maybe thats the key. PDA Net would pop up in recovery.

I've tried PDAnet, Unrevoked2, the modified inf trick, everything. 2 different cards including a PNY 2Gb and 2 separate computers. Clicked the card in at every nanosecond possible from recovery to the black screen and no dice. I sincerely believe at this time that my phone is unrootable. I've tried literally HUNDREDS of times and I'm beginning to fear damaging my battery contacts/sd slot. Guess it wasn't meant to be for me.

Have you tried while in airplane mode?

I was in the same boat as you last night, saw a post advising to disable all wireless connections, and it worked immediately. It's worth a try at least.

Heck ya it's worth a try, that's the one thing I haven't tried I guess. Giving it a shot now.

    GOT ROOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's the deal though...it failed probably 10 times even when doing the airplane mode thing. So I was just screwing around trying anything I could think of and here's what finally got me into recovery:

With loop running, I arrowed down to recovery but didn't select it. Removed SD card but left in slot. I've done this countless times before and it didn't work. So...I decided to throw it another curve. I went ahead and pressed the power button while on recovery and then quickly unplugged my USB cable and VERY quickly plugged it back in. Then I immediately pressed in the SD card. I got all that done before the black screen.

For the first time in hundreds of tried, I got the lovely and ever so elusive:
"exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2)"

I've read every thread here over and over and may have missed it somewhere but I have not heard of anyone trying this yet. So if you are the owner of a seemingly unrootable phone and you've tried everything like myself, it may be worth a shot.

Yes. Also, I had most recently loaded the flash tool onto my pc and used the unrevoked html link that comes with the package to update the boot driver. I was using the PNY 2Gb card at the time. I really think the usb cable pull was the ticket rather than just luck. I failed too many times with the card pull/push for it to have just magically work. Not saying its impossible that I hit the timing on my 200th+ try but for it to work the first time with a major difference added to it...the cable seems to have been the springboard for me.
    Here's hoping you get it.

Yep this method works for me every time. Rooted two phones now. I've gotten in adb at least a dozen times this way to do various other mods. I'm using the 2gb PNY card too. does not seem to work with my 8gb card or the one that came with the phone.

HOLY CR@P! Thanks to this thread my dang Incredible FINALLY rooted. I have been trying this off and on for the last few weeks, with nothing but device not found.

The airplane mode, uninstalling the HTC Sync, and maybe the card click finally worked. I already had PDAnet installed, but I reinstalled it after uninstalling HTC Sync just to be sure. Now where/when can I upgrade to Froyo??? :)

Thanks to everybody who have been trying to help others get rooted.

Thanks man. And how long did you leave the cable out for, and when did you put the SD card back in?

I hit recovery then only had the cable out for a split second, then put it right back in as quick as possible. I already had the sd card out (although still in the slot). So as soon as I got the cable back in, I quickly pushed the card back in right after that.

Cliff notes version...as quick as you can get both steps done back to back. :D

the timing of 1 second in my head is what did it, nothing else i did would work

airplane mode just in case, sd card out, usb in, loop already running, down button and power, go to recovery, when windows disconnects counted 1 second and inserted sd card

and magically it worked :) followed the 10 min tutorial the rest of the way and i have root :D
