I'm burning through the data!General

I might have to purchase the 5 gig plan, I'm burning through the data on this thing and almost up to my 2 gig limit. I never went over around 900 mb on my DINC in a month. Anyone else getting data usage alerts? I'd heard 4g phones went through data faster, now I believe it.

    Edit 11/28/12:
I have to correct/edit my initial post, according to my verizon online account my data is only at "0.829GB" right now and I only have 5 days left in my cycle. The data alerts I was getting including the one that said I was 90% through my allotted data were apparently wrong so it looks like I'll make it through this cycle well under my 2 gig limit. We'll see about next month, I haven't done much music streaming yet.

Turn off your data when you are not using it and make sure apps are not auto updating in the back round. Then you shouldnt be using loads of data by an accident

Thanks so much for this post! I'm a current Droid Incredible 1 user who still has unlimited data on my line. I saw this phone and was thinking about getting it, and the guy at the store kept telling me that 2GB would be fine for me, because I was using only about 750MB currently.

I guess I will jump through the hoops to try and keep my unlimited data plan that both my wife and I have.

This is pretty much going to kill it for me. The guy at VZW told me I'm only using 400MB of data on my dinc per month, but if 4G burns through data that fast, it's just not worth upgrading.

Yeah, I am at 250MB in streaming audio just today, and not done yet either.

One thing I didn't mention was that I only have 6 more days till my cycle resets, and I went through a lot of data the first 3 days adding apps and playing with phone incessantly. With that said, it's still going through data faster than I thought it would.

Question for Liamo, if I turn off my data, will I still be able to accept calls/texts?

I was able to keep my unlimited data by upgrading another line and then transferring that phone to my line.

Don't do a direct upgrade, as it will make you lose unlimited data.

Yes, calls and texts aren't data, so you will still receive those. :)

Not necessarily...I was able to upgrade my phone and keep my now four year unlimited plan and still get a subsidized price! I actually stepped through the whole process when upgrading through AmazonWireless. The only weirdness was the shipping date was shown as Jan. 7th ? SIM card on Nov. 28th?

    Guess we'll see...

I'm confused. I don't understand why going 4G would lead to you using more data. If you're doing the same things you were before then you should just be doing them faster. Overall, 4G shouldn't use any more data than 3G. I think other things are at play here. For one, your data usage is always higher when you first get a phone because you're doing a lot of things to set it up. I remember my first month's data usage was twice as much as the subsequent months when I got my first smart phone.

Second, I think since you are able to do things faster, some of you are simply doing more with your phone. For instance, if you just wasting 30 mins of time on the internet with your phone, the fact that you can surf faster with 4G means you'll be able to occupy more of that 30 mins with actual browsing as opposed to waiting for things to load. That means you're actually doing more than you would have with the 3G.

Having 4G just ALLOWS you to use more data.
And also since this phone can stream HD video it will add up fast.

I'm sitting at about 8 Gigs right now and have a week left on the cycle.
I usually run about 10 Gigs per month but I think with this phone that may increase.

I was running over 5 gigs with my old 3G devices.

One day a Verizon guy tried to tell me that I wouldn't need more than 2 Gigs. HA!

I also keep my WiFi off almost all the time.
I can't use WiFi where I am most of the time so I don't bother with it. Even at home.

Oh yeah. I just handed down my Rezound to my 17 yr old daughter.
She has the 2 Gig limit. Now THAT worries me. The imagio she had been using was so outdated that she couldn't even bust 500 megs in a month.

My 15 yr old used over a gig in a week on her T-Bolt while visiting California.

If you keep your habits the same, whether you use 3G or 4G, won't make a difference. What makes a difference is when people get a faster phone and then start doing a bunch of stuff they weren't before. If 90% of your data was used streaming Pandora with your 3G phone, and 90% of your data is used streaming Pandora with your 4G phone, you shouldn't expect a rise in data usage.

You can't really get upset with the Verizon rep if he gives you an estimate of what you'll need based on your current usage and then you get the phone and completely change your habits.

Just got an email saying I went over my data allotment this cycle but my usage at the verizon site is only .905GB. Hmm.

I wonder if they are having a data leakage issue like the iPhone had, and they have fixed the reporting, but not the messaging system reporting...

The data usage shown on the website can be up to 2 days behind.

Think I'll have to setup wifi at home. Data is getting sucked away quickly. Can't go to the mall, coffee shop or library anytime I need it. LOL
