I am reading threads that state rooting from stock 2.2
    with instructions.
In these same threads I am reading it is NOT possible to
    root from stock 2.2???

    So which is it?

OH VERY TRUE...you can now root a stock 2.2. I just got my phone on Wednesday...wife was out of town so I had to wait for her to get back from the East Coast so that she can root my phone. On Thursday she returned and said it would be no problem, she isn't afraid to do any of that stuff.
Anyway...she followed this video guide step by step and my stock 2.2 from the Sprint store was rooted within 45 minutes. she downloaded the latest wireless tether apk and it works flawlessly. Here is the link but scroll down the page a bit...part I and part II videos are both there. I would suggest watching it through once 1st then proceed:

    Good Luck!!

The way you root 2.2 is by reverting it back to 2.1, then root it. That might be what's causing some of the confusion.

Uminchu is right...this video brings your 2.2 down to 2.1, then does the Unrevoked3, then Unrevoked Forever, flashes a AmonRA receovery or Clockwork (your choosing), then finally a rooted stock 2.2. From there you can choose to flash any custom ROMS you desire. My wife likes the stock version and have tried others but says although they all are great, there are glitches here and there.

Oh...if you decide to stay on the rooted 2.2, don't forget to download the wireless tether apk. so that you can utilize the free wireless hoptspot option on your phone that Sprint wants to charge us $30 a month for.

    wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre8.apk - android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users 2.0.5-pre8 *** EXPERIMENTAL *** - Project Hosting on Google Code

My wife has rooted her own, then a friend of ours and now mine. I have 5 people at work wanting her to root their Androids ;)

That is what I am afraid of..
Glitches. I rarely has issue with stock rom
The screen wigs out sometimes and has touch
Input with mind of its own lol

But I want equally stable, and faster most of all.
    Interested in over clock aswell.
Also cool your wife is in it
    Im such a tech geek.
I have three HD2 to flash to android lol

3 HD2 to flash? Is it yours or are you doing it for others? I told the people at my work that my wife will do theirs for a fee

Becareful if you are thinking about over clocking your phone, there are plus and minuses. If you do it wrong you may have new pretty paperweight. Be sure to read up on all of the benefits.

Absolutely...but 2.2 rooted gives you faster MFLOPS speeds. 2.1 only gave me around 6.15 and 2.2 gave me 32.22. Much faster speeds.

Make sure you go into your system update and uncheck the HTC software update. If not, it will prompt you to update to the 2.2.

Technically, you don't have to wipe your phone to upgrade to 2.2. But many, many people found that doing so prevents/fixes a lot of inexplicable problems with the 2.2 upgrade, most importantly, battery life.

Also, regarding a previous post claiming that overclocking can brick your phone.... Very unlikely. The phone has safeguards that shuts itself down when certain thresholds are crossed. At worst, you get stuck in a boot loop, which can seem like a bricked situation to a novice. But there are ways to recover from that. Make sure you do nandroid backups before trying anything weird with overclocking. And even if you don't have a nandroid backup, with some leet adb skills, you can remove the overclock settings that will allow your phone to get out of the boot loop.

Technically it's a 2.2 to 2.1 Rollback method. When you work through the instructions you rollback to the last OEM release of 2.1, and then you root 2.1 and then you flash an already rooted 2.2 ROM.

The rollback method itself is quite easy. Just a few commands in ADB, flash a few files and voila, you are in Android 2.1. Choose your method of root from there, and then flash a custom rom.

    thanks
Is this a stock 2.1 or a rooted 2.1 because I was always told on sprjntusers.com that once you updated to 2.2, there WASN'T any way to get back to 2.1

Well good thing you checked here on androidforums, cause it sounds like they're behind the times over there on sprintusers :) There's an exploit for 2.2 that allows you to go back to 2.1. From there, any of the old 2.1 root methods will work. Check the sticky thread in this subforum for more details.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered here, but can I upgrade my rooted 2.1 phone to 2.2 without wiping it and starting over, and if so, how (and do I want to)? Thanks.

Root noob going to do it today... going to have to ask, what kernal or rom am I going to need to flash to unlock the current frame rate cap? That's my whole objective through going through this root process, as well as the free wireless thethering. I got the tethering figured out once I've rooted, but I just don't know where to look for the framerate cap fix. Any rom's you guys know of that fix that without causing any other problems, like wifi issues or anything?

You can get the FPS uncapped with a custom kernel flashed over a stock ROM. Otherwise, pretty much any reputable custom ROM has already incorporated that fix in their kernels. If you stick with a stock ROM, check out the kernels in my sig. Both are good.
