I just bought a Droid 2 weeks ago, and not only am I new to the phone but I'm new to this rooting thing. I went to Verizon today and the guy gave me a little info on looking into rooting it and said if for any reason I need to take the phone back I can reset it to where they can't tell I rooted it so that my warranty isn't voided. Reading this forum i'm getting the impression that there are possibilities that I can't reset it or if I do it wrong I'm pretty much screwed. I've tried to search this and I know I sound like an idiot...So I probably shouldn't do it period. But I am interested...none of this "rooting" stuff is clicking though.

Check out this forum: All Things Root (Eris) - Android Forums

And yes you can roll back if you root so they wont be able to tell. Make sure you dont have the 1.49 boot loader before you try to root. You can tell by powering off the phone and holding the Vol down button and end button. It will tell you HBOOT 1.4X at the top of the screen. You need 1.46 or 1.47 to be able to root.
