I'm not notified of email...?Support

I just got my first Android phone, a galaxy note, a few days ago. I come from an iPhone so I'm used to the concept of messages from apps, including email, messaging apps, etc, popping up on screen to give me a notification of some recent important event.

I'm trying to figure out how to have my phone notify me when I get an email message. With the gmail app and the default settings I'm using right now, the only notification I get is a barely audible sound, and irregularly at that (sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't). If I look in the notifications bar, I can see the alert, but it doesn't jump out at me - I have to go and look at my notifications to see that I have a new email, etc.

Ideally, in addition to a consistent and noticeable sound/vibration, I would like it or a preview to pop up on the screen briefly (including popping up on the lock screen if I'm not using the phone). Is there anything that can accommodate this? If not the native gmail app than perhaps another app?

Something similar for skype, line, SMS, facebook etc would also be nice, but I suppose I'll start with email, unless there's an easy way to get them all set up with one app or setting.

Aside from the pop-up notifications, Executive Assistant will do what you want -- lockscreen notifications for email, text messages, facebook, tasks/calendar events, twitter, etc.

"Missed It!" is another app (widget) that you can use to keep track of notifications from whatever apps you like. It can also be added to the lockscreen.

The notification volume is in the system settings. 'settings -- sounds' or something like that.

I used to use widget locker for my lock screen, and put missed it on the screen so that it looked like the following when I turned on the phone (i.e. lockscreen):
