This link gave me some instructions about doing this without having to root my phone.

How to Install/Upgrade Android 2.2 Froyo on HTC Desire | Pathik Shah

    Specifically:
How to Install Android 2.2 Froyo on HTC Desire
How to Upgrade HTC Desire to Android 2.2 Froyo
To install Android 2.2 Froyo on your HTC Desire, you can either use the official OTA update or a custom Froyo ROM.
Official Android 2.2 Froyo ROM Install (Recommended)
Download the official Android 2.2 Froyo HTC Desire ROM from HTC
Rename it to update.zip and copy it to your SD card via USB.
Switch off your phone and while holding the Volume Down button, power it back on.
Enter the recovery mode and press the Power button and the Volume Up button.
    Select Apply sdcard:update.zip
Your Android 2.2 install should soon be complete and you can reboot your HTC Desire.

My question is...has anyone tried this? If so, has it worked? Do the gurus think this can work? PLEASE let me know...as I'd like to upgrade my phone using this if its safe!

    THANK YOU :)

There are methods for getting froyo on a desire that hasn't got it. Yes some of the methods are tried and tested.

Without knowing specific information about your device, we cannot advise you of the best way to do it.

    Branded? I assume so.

    CDMA or GSM?

    Carrier?

It's GSM, with Telus (Canada). I'm not sure what you mean by branded but it might be lol. I can assure you that it has nothing Telus related on it, other than the network information. If you can help me out with this, I'd appreciate it a tonne! That said, the primary reason I want FroYo is because of the ability to move my apps to the SD card...I'm really sick of my phone telling me that its low on space. I know I could always root it but I don't want to lose my warranty that I got for it.

I have a Telus Desire too that I unlocked and I'm using on the Rogers network. I updated to a generic unbranded Froyo v2.2 a month ago and it works great. As for apps on the SD card, there's a way to modify the file system so all apps can be installed to the memory card without rooting (albeit I haven't done it):

    Good luck.

I have been trying to update my unrooted HTC Desire with Froyo. renamed the file name as update.zip, put in my SD card and tried to boot as said. but its showing signature varification error and installation aborted. please note that i am unable to boot my phone as OTA update caused me rebooting loop.

    Please help.

This thread is a little old but it is how I and many others got Froyo and it does not require any rooting, once you do this you will receive all your updates from HTC directly, just read through the thread to see how it is done and you will be fine!!! My Desire was a Telus and I did this and it works great. As I said just do as the thread tell's you to.

I can confirm that I too have a Telus Desire that I flashed to Froyo using the above method, and it worked great. I've updated a couple times since then to version 2.29.405.5 and it works great too.

Do note that not all over the air (OTA) updates will work with debranded Desires like what we have. But if an OTA fails, just find the RUU and do a full flash to update. It's more of a hassle as it wipes the phone, but it gets the job done, and backup programs save most of the work.
    :)
