It seems to me that rooting would make the phone better as far as speed and customization, but I have no idea where to start!

I've read the tutorial thread, but I really just don't understand the techinal jargon for phones I guess. Flash, Rom, nandroid??

If anyone could help with a step by step it would be appreciated. Or maybe point me in the right direction.

I guess my main issue is that I don't understand what is going on with the phone, so i can't wrap my head around all of the instructions.

If there is a chance I could brick my phone and have nothing, let me know, as that would not be a good idea.

A step by step? That is what that guide/tutorial is. I understand that you may not understand the "jargon" but if you take your time and read it again and again it may become a little more clear. Let me help you out a bit here...

    Flashing is like installing.

    ROM is like the OS

    Nandroid is like system restore.

When you read and follow the guide, you root the phone using the manual method. After it is successfully rooted, you will then flash (install) the recovery image. After that is done, you will then create a nandroid backup (system restore). After that is done, you can now flash (install) a ROM (a new OS).

Hopefully this helps you understand a bit better in a least some common terms...

Gibson.. please don't take this the wrong way... but here is my advice.

    READ.

    Re-READ

    Re-Re-READ

Search for each term you don't understand

    Start the process over

    Shortcuts will brick your phone.

Yeah this might be out of my league. I'm pretty good with computers, I think, but I"m not so sure about this one.

I may give it a shot later.

Is there anyway to know you have done it correctly?

Thanks for the advice, sorry for the stupid questions!

    Hey there.. wait a minute.

I was skeptical and scared to death of rooting my phone. Didn't understand all the terms.. the hows.. etc.

I still don't understand everything there is.

However, the more times I read.. the more I got comfortable with rooting and installing a custom rom.

I finally tried it... and man am I glad I did.

It really isn't that difficult IF you read and follow the directions TO THE TEE.

It is fairly "automatic" if you use an auto-rooter like Fresh Kitchen.

There are no stupid questions. We just really encourage people to take their time, do the research and read :).

You can't really mess it up, as long as you follow the guide step by step. You can't really brick your Hero unless you flash a GSM ROM and/or Radio.

You will know you've done it correctly if you follow the guide. It even tells you there what to expect. Please take your time and read.

    Thanks guys!

Okay so while trying to do the auto rooter with 'fresh-pre-kitchen', I am using the checklist under the green ? circle it comes up with a red X by "remount". I have my phone plugged in, and I have debugging on. The other option is that "you aren't using fresh rom."

Can anyone tell me what my issue is with this?

I did download the patch thing on the pre-kitchen page that you are supposed to have for auto-rooting, and replaced the other kitchen file with it.

--I tried the manual root and couldn't get past step 2 in which I was supposed to enter 'adb devices' and see my serial number pop up.

Ummm.. WOW. It has been so long I am trying to remember.

NOTE: Fresh has a brand new KITCHEN that is supposed to be better.

You might try unhooking your phone and mounting the sd card and see if that works.

Sounds like you don't have any drivers installed that will recognize your device. My suggestion, download PDAnet and install it. That will have the correct drivers.

OH DOINK. That sounds right ccapasso.

I installed HTC Sync on my puter then uninstalled it. It left the drivers on the puter and it worked fine.

Yeah I just saw that there was a full kitchen out so I downloaded it and had the same error (remount) and saw in another thread that they suggested getting PDAnet rather than HTCsync, so I am going to go download that now, and try agian. Maybe reboot the phone as well.

    Thanks for the patience guys.

    Where do I download PDAnet?

Do i just install it on my computer or need to put in on my phone?

Good luck. So I take it that installing the correct drivers worked for you :) ?

I will be gone the rest of the evening so will be unable to provide advice until tomorrow. G'luck though.

Just follow the guide. After you root, make sure you have flashed the Recovery image (i think kitchen might do that for you) and then do a nandroid backup. From there, it is up to you what you want to do.

Alright I've tried quite a bit and can't get this to work. Kitchen claims I'm not using a Sprint Hero and rooting fails on it. Same with Pre-kitchen.

I then went to manual rooting and found that the reason I couldn't get it to recognize my phone was that I didn't have the right drivers (which PDAnet fixed). So I got past step 2, but now it is step 6 that messes me up.

    I don't see :
You should see an output that says:
    $ /data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
    [+] Using newer pope_inode_info layout
    Opening: /proc/857/fd/3
    SUCCESS: Enjoy the shell.

I don't know what happens at this step that is messing me up, but whatever it is, it probably is what is messing up the auto-root as well.
