Yet again I'm getting the memory warning. I know there are ways around it but this should be solved by now. I remember having this problem on a old palm I had.
coming from a 3GS which I had hundreds of apps with no issues.

Google needs to wake up and fix this mess, and apps to SD in not the solution, that's only a band-aid.

    Sorry, rant over

I blame HTC more than Google. I think Google sorta assumed most phones would get at least a half gig of internal, if not, 8 or 16, maybe even 32 gig so thought apps2sd would be more than sufficient.

HTC integrate android very well, and sense is very good, but they skimp on the camera lens quality, the flash power is OK, and all of their phones are pretty much mono sound bar the HTC surround which they are advertising as some fantastic phone in its own right when really stereo speakers should be standard. Battery life too needs updating (just make a thicker phone option, most of us would be happy to take it!).

Like I said before, if Nokia ever come to their senses and go android, I'll drop HTC like a hot potato... sure I'll miss sense but I trust Nokia to get it right, as they are streets ahead when it comes to hardware.

Exactly, it's HTCs fault...they've addressed it with the new handsets but us Desire owners have to make do with A2SD+ and custom ROMs. Does the job, though

There will never be a fix from HTC for this because sadly it is a design-oversight (at least I'd hope). Rooting and going A2SD+ is really the only true way to solve it permanently.

I'm more okay with this issue than the very cheap speaker in the phone..

Other than that, this phone is a dream.

The part in bold is all there is to it.

I held back from making the most of my Desire until FroYo was released. I was then disappointed that A2SD wasn't all it was made out to be - eg. leaving some of the app on the internal storage etc.

I eventually plucked up the courage to root and Flash a ROM with A2SD+ and I haven't looked back since.

Not only does my phone run faster and better than every before, all my apps are stored on the SD card and the internal memory is left free.

It is a joke - this is 2010, 128MB of internal memory is not acceptable

Yes I know rooting is a way around it BUT why should I have to root to get something that should already be a part of the phone - I used to say the same to iPhone owners, it is wrong that you have to jailbreak to get the best out of your phone

I hope this is something HTC are aware of and correct in their future phones

I am down to 12MB and I might just have to root even though I would rather not

They are more than aware, if you look at both of the new Desires (Z,HD), they have much more internal memory.

And yes, it sucks to have to root to get be able to not worry about app space, I agree.

The only bad thing I can say about the Desire, it just seems like a crazy decision to have such a small internal memory, when you can't run apps from the SD Card, unless you go through a complex (for some) root process, or the force App 2 SD one.

Erm, you don't need to root to sort this out. There's a relatively straightforward change to one setting that allows you to move the vast majority of apps to SD.

See this thread (in the Tips & Tricks sub-forum): http://androidforums.com/desire-tip...apps-sd-card-unrooted-device-noobs-guide.html

Admittedly it would be even better if this was unneccessary, but it really is simple to do if you just follow the steps one-by-one.

That method can move apps to the SD card where the app developer hasn't updated the code for the A2SD feature, but widgets will crash if they're not on phone memory. Rooting and A2SD+ is the only real solution but it's a shame people have to take such a step.

Due to running out of space on my Desire I'm going to need to root my phone. I'm competent with computers but have never done anything like this before. I know there are guides out there on how to do this but could someone possibly recommend me one they found useful?

While that 'trick' does force install everything to SD card and allow you to move apps that would otherwise not be allowed you STILL have core files from apps on the phone at all times.
I have both Apps2SD app from the market AND used this technique and im still going down in internal storage...though it DID push almost all of the 39MB of Need For Speed onto the SD card some still remains.
If you read the entire thread they do say that rooting and using apps2sd+ will ultimately free your internal fully otherwise you will still be left with something.

Can any of you guys tell me how many apps do you have on your phones?

Because I have a few, and I still have about 70 megs free.

Check out my thread in the Desire Rooting section. It could prove useful to you, as others have said it proved useful to them. :)

    just FYI,

there's now a method to also move all app data to the sd, and trick the phone into thinking it has up to 2gb of internal memory.

[DATA2SD] More space and more I/O for your Desire - xda-developers

in time, this issue will be a thing of the past for people willing to root. I'm still holding back from applying data2sd, but will eventually go for it.

For people who aren't willing to root but are still complaining: the specs of the phone are easily accesible, did you research before buying? all these are very well known issues, i get it that htc should strive to deliver a better product, but nobody forced you to buy it. just sayin.

I too think the internal space is appalling I posted a review on Amazon talking about this and the speaker and the camera lens and gave the desire one star. If enough people did this the HTC bosses would pretty soon realise the shortcomings. I'd encourage anyone else who has similar feelings to do the same.

You do know they are awareof the memory issue right? The Desire Z, and the Desire HD both have a lot more internal memory than the original.

The speaker and lens I will admit are both mediocre, but do you really think that your one-star Amazon review will matter at all to HTC? If anything, you're just keeping people from investing from what is otherwise, a fantastic device.

HTC have now addressed the balance with the new phones - we all chose to buy the Desire so if you really need tons of space for bullshit apps then you have to root...

But no, we shouldn't HAVE to root...

I find it funny that HTC made the internal memory so tiny as I have a Zenithink ePad and juct checked the internal memory on it and have 1.24 gb free.

When I got this phone I wanted Android and loved the look of Sense so ended up with the Desire, I think the HD is just too big.

Am not rooting my phone to fix this issue.

Well sorry then. You're stuck. Delete all your apps.
