159mb seems like no space at all. Seems like stuff should install on the SD card. I know you can if you root, but you shouldn't have to. I clear the cache on apps regularly. How else can we avoid filling up our internal memory?

Some apps have an option to save their cache to the SD card, like Dolphin Browser, so that's one way to conserve space. I think the most effective thing to do, though, is to uninstall unnecessary apps. Since that can be annoying, I suggest using an app like AppBrain to manage lists of your favorite apps online. That way you can install and uninstall whole groups of apps depending on your needs. Also, there's a suggestion on the Android site to allow running apps from SD. If you go to that thread and star it, there's a better chance they'll take care of it in the next version.

    Thanks for the link, thenestor.

While 159Mb does seem small, remember that most apps are >200kb. I have 44 apps installed on my Eris and still have just over 60mb of free space left. That's not too bad. But, I do agree that more internal space would be optimal.

I hope that in the future either a.) the option to install programs and run from the SD card is available...or b.) there is less bloatware and pre-loaded software that will free up internal space.

yea, i uninstalled a bunch of apps, it just sucks that we have to. my iphone friends were all jealous that we can change the SD card to get more capacity, but it seems it doesnt matter because we can only install 159 mbs worth of apps. weak!

you could root (if your still on 1.5) and run apps from the sd card, but I would suggest upgrading from the stock 8gb card and going with a faster class sd card(class six is the highest) They are a bit pricey (for me) tho.

actually there doesn't have to be another way. If you haven't updated to the leak, then you can root your phone now. Actually the rooted rom you use to obtain root is 2.1 so... problem solved on both accounts.

Yes but then you have the hassle of dealing with 2.1 and its problems, which imo seems like opening a whole new can of worms. I'm in the same situation i'd like to be able to use apps2sd and wireless tethering but i don't want to go through the hassle of trying out the different roms to find out which is best suited for what i need. After countless hours of reading its still not clear to me what path would be optimal and therefore i'm just waiting for a new path to show up or i'll continue my search until i find something that suits me. It would be nice to have a wiki setup with known facts instead of reading thread after thread most of which contain mostly posts with no real information in them at all. Then you get conflicting information and you don't know who's telling the truth and which way you should go. At this point i think rooting the eris is just not far enough along to present clear options and only time will solve that mystery.

You can unroot the phone. You could spend a couple hours rooting and playing with roms to see which one you liked. Every version of the Eris has a "can of worms" 1.5 = YouTube 2.1 v1 leak = google login 2.1 v2 leak =nothing I can't live with. I say take the root path and try it out. You can always go back. Just don't update to a leak yet as there is no going back from that.

Yeah but i'm not too confident on making a backup to restore it how it is now without messing something up. I know theres a way but it sounds abit complicated. I like the phone how it is now i'd just like a couple new features i can't get with it being non-rooted. But for now i'll just live with it the way it is unless i get really bored and want to play around with some roms.

But can the phone even handle the extra speed? If not then you are throwing money out of the window. They will handle the class 6 cards, but until someone posts theres a big difference in speed with a class 10, i won't be plunking down any money.

Short answer is no. Check out the all things root subforum. acidbath has a nice FAQ thread started over there that covers just about everything.

2.1 does not have log on issues. The speaker dying out in the middle of calls, requiring a restart is also gone for the past week. What other bug is there? The 2.1 leak is perfection for me.
