Root [International] PhilZ CWM Recovery - Dummies Guide

PhilZ 5.14.5 is up
Cue Ironass, the changelog specialist......

Hawker! Hawker! Hawker! With just a little extra effort you could actually make your update post useful...

1. Nice, bold, size 3, typeface, so that anyone scrolling through this thread can pick up the various releases very quickly. Smiley face is optional.

2. In quotation marks and using italics so that everyone knows you are quoting the dev, you post the changelog.

3. You then offer the download links for everones convenience. Colour coding helps to prevent confusion between the 2 models and follows on from the Dummies Guides, for continuity.

4. You also give the link to the changelog in case anyone would like to read it or access the follow up posts.

So, for the last time...

PhilZ Recovery 5.14.5 is up! :)

"It is a massive nandroid code rewrite to merge cm-10.2 new wrapper
To enable compression, you have to go again under Misc Nandroid Settings and choose the tar.gz format
I added a new "fast" compression mode too
Now, you can also backup and restore /data/media to external storage

See... that wasn't so hard was it old stick? ;)

Along with a hefty dose of sarcasm, no doubt...

Without question.
I once asked him if he sees himself as a sarcastic person, to which he replied "no"

Moi, sarcastique, aucun moyen!

As we are now privvy to ironass the slug, I shall now inform you that there is now Philz 5.14.6 and also 5.14.7 available.

5.14.6:
- remove redundant check for /data/media before custom format of sdcard + merge to cm-10.1
- fix compression value would stuck to "fast" and could actually cause an unexpected very high compression level + merge to cm-10.1
- when key repeat is disabled: fix reboot when turning on screen after it was auto-blanked + merge to cm-10.1
- when key repeat is disabled: fix dim screen will not occur and only blank screen event was triggered + merge to cm-10.1
- fix dim/blank screen issues after reboot timer was reached and USB cable was connected + merge to cm-10.1
- fix various bugs with key pthread lock/unlock (ui_wait_key() and ui_wait_key_with_repeat()) + merge to cm-10.1
- after screen is turned on, next touch event will now be considered (remove ignore_key_action after screen was blanked) + merge to cm-10.1
- more stable blank screen gesture actions (mainly on long press and move gesture) + merge to cm-10.1
This version adds a lot of fixes to touch events handling, key repeat, blank/dim screen timers...

v5.14.7
- fix slow touch response when key repeat is disabled

Bolox to all that font size/bold shite mallarky.

Anybody updated to 5.14.9 yet? I've downloaded the file twice, but when tryinig to flash, I keep getting an error:

"Can't open /external_sd/philz_touch_5.14.9-i9505.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted"

Is it me (I wouldn't be surprised if it is...) or are any of you also having this? I've no problems reading or writing other files to my SD card.

Are you trying to flash a CWM flashable .zip file using Odin?

Philz Recovery for the Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505) smartphone device for which the version has been numbered 5.16.2 (CWM 6.0.3.9) now appears to be available for digital download on the world wide web.

Here follows the main enhancements of this particular version, according to Phil, the author of the aforementioned software:

This is the first stable cwm touch cm-10.2 release for S4
Supports new vold managed volumes, USB OTG hot plug...

This also has a workaround to let Aroma File Manager see external storage and even USB OTG files if you plug the key before running Aroma
It also should fix ors with new voldmanager

Thank you for reading.

(Cantankerous old Celt! ;))

UPDATE

All sorts of problems with this latest version. It doesn't want to recognise my backup path to EXTSDcard that I have always used and I believe, from PhilZ thread, that it does not restore old backups. Reverting to previous version until I have more time to work this one out.

(For..."Work this one out", read... "Until Hawker comes up with an answer!")

PhilZ Recovery 5.17.1 is up! :)

"Change log is huge, will post later
I largely tested, include backup efs, delete my efs partition and restore it. Some sweating here, first trial on this S4

I fixed what ever I can think about, include format to ext2 and ext4, Aroma to see USB OTG storage and exfat volumes on the new cm-10.2 vold, backup restore, size detection of all partitions...

Backup speed is unchanged for now, same as 5.16.x cm-10.1 builds. I will fix the logging thing slowing down exfat backups on a next update

PhilZ Recovery 5.17.6 is up! :)

"The final stable is here
The menus are changed because of the new vold code in cm-10.2: you can hotplug USB key
Now, backup of 3.5 Gb to internal storage, all stat options enabled, takes around 3 mn (same speed as stock CWM)
Backup to exfat external storage of same data is extremely fast too, around 10mn and maybe less if you have a faster card than my old one

Do not forget to enable all progress stats again in Misc Nandrodi Settings. I tested for you: speed change is about a few seconds only now with or without them

Big thanks to @wanam for providing latest kernel to fit this
Also, @xiaolu for his vold changes to support exfat through ko modules
"

Another, "No go", for me, even after changing my Storage in Advanced. Back to v5.15.8.

Hmm you haven't swapped phones with Syd have you, just a thought.

I'm beginning to wonder that myself! :vamp:

The fact of the matter is that I have been unable to do a nandroid backup with any PhilZ release after v5.15.8.

I would be interested if anyone else on a stock, modified, ROM has been able to get the latest releases to work with a backup to extSD:questionmark:
