Root Explorer is useful for many other operations that require changing of permissions, for instance, as well as editing system files. Well worth having IMHO.
I see. I think I'll skip it for now as I don't plan on doing anything drastic yet as I still have a lot to learn. I just want to get Dan's CM ROM installed and get used to that for at least a month while I keep learning.
I always make a nandroid if I am about to flash a new ROM as well as one after I have flashed it. A nandroid is a mirror image in time and it depends how much work and how many updates you have done since your previous nandroid. Titanium can be used for both downloaded and system apps and can be prgrammed to update as often as you like on various schedules.
So a Nandroid is like a mirror image of your HDD? I think I get it now.
Also, is PhilZ CWM Recovery like the 'safe mode' in Windows?
I've done my backups and I'm ready to install CM: boot into CWM, wipe data/factory reset, select CM, flash, select Gapps, flash, then reset.. sounds easy enough, just hope it goes to plan.
Tempted to try his 4.4.4 GE ROM but I think CM is enough for now, plus I want something solid and thoroughly tested as I don't plan on doing this often. It's mind boggling how people flash new ROMs every week.
Just sharing a piece of my mind here. The main reason I'm doing all this is to reclaim ownership of my phone. It's unbelievable how Samsung would willingly sabotage their own device and release it in this state, bogged down with so much crap and bloatware.
The battery life was driving me nuts, I've been used to charging once a week for years but now I'm charging daily. An extended battery (Anker) solved that but I know it'll be much better on a cleaner ROM and I want to make the most of my device anyway, especially considering I know the hardware is capable of a lot more and deserves some respect, not to mention I spent $440usd on it in Thailand.
I only had my phone for a week and I was already teaching my friend who had theirs for months all the basics and removing most of the bloatware, so if the average joe has no idea what half this stuff is what is Samsung expecting us to think. We used to have phones that resembled bricks once upon a time, but now I see people carrying around bricks attached to their phones instead (power banks) and I'm guessing bloatware has a lot to do with it.
