I have read about all the rooting and wireless tethering and what not and I desperately would love to have my droid act as a wireless hot spot for many reasons, but I really am not sure of my abilities and am fairly certain I wold mess it up but good.

Now obviously I am not able to walk into Verizon and say set me up and if and when I can they are going to want an additional monthly fee which I think is going to be pretty high.

I am sure I am not alone in my desire to get my phone worked on and I am the Tampa area of Fl and would gladly be willing to work something out with a person knowledgeable in this type of thing.

It would be great if there were a way to hook people with me up with people like that.

I understand your hesitation as someone who questioned whether or not he had the ability and know-how to root myself. However, after having read through the forums and directions 5-6 times and taking a lot of time and doing it slowly I was able to root and had absolutely no problems doing it.

If you follow the directions in the All things Root section, under the title "Now you can live without fear of bricking" and "Guide(s) to everything Root Related" and follow the step by step instructions it is all there. Further, there are a lot of people in the Root sub-forum who are very well versed in how to root and the potential issues that can arise, they will help you with any question you may have.

Not to rain on your parade, but I hope your not hoping to replace your ISP with your Droid because Verizon WILL notice the massive usage of Data on one of their customers who does not have their Tethering.

I do not warn you of this because I care enough of your business which I dont, to each his own, but the growing use of wifi/wired tethering from root/non-root Droids will eventually one day have Verizon act upon it and reign down on us their massive Ban Hammer.

BUT... if you plan to use your phone as a hotspot with conservative usage...then maybe you wont need to pay someone to root your phone lol. I can definately point u to the right direction which will allow you to root your phone in less than 30mins (the way i did it) IF you updated to 2.1

No Not looking to replace my ISP have Verizon FIOS and it is way quicker then anything I would expect this to do, I am looking to have wifi for my two son's while traveling in the car. One with a notebook and the other with an Itouch. My 5 year old with the itouch is always asking me if there is internet where we are. :)

It would just come in handy, and yeah I understand the need to shell out a few bills but would hope to find a local person.

OK S1ckGhost, lay some links on me I am running the 2.1 software and if you think it is that easy let me know how, I am not completely ******ed with tech stuff. :)

My current understanding is first you need to root the phone, then you need to install something called a rom (Don't really get this part), then you need to install a program that allows wifi tethering?

In your situation use this process for rooting. http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/54164-2-1-ota-root.html

I would recommend this site. Obtaining Root | Root Your Droid

This is the local mirror in case it's down. http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/45764-guide-s-everything-root-related.html

And this should be mandatory reading. http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/47349-now-you-can-live-without-fear-bricking.html

Can I still get food? :(

Edit: Nooooooo!!!! So Hungry and this diet sucks!!!!

OK Looked through that and it seems it is pretty easy to Root the phone from the link posted i clicked on a link that tells how to add wi-fi tethering but no mention was made of adding a new rom which I thought you needed to do?

Can you give me a list in order of what I need to do to get from point A (2.1 droid) to point P (My phone acting as a mi-fi spot. :)

You'll do fine. Just read and reread everything.

If worse comes to worse, my kid brother is a whiz at this kind of thing and lives in Clearwater. He wouldn't mind helping (for a meal) when his wife and kids aren't around.

I'm up that way from fort myers every few weeks as well.

You won't. It's really really hard to mess up this phone. Instead of paying someone to root your droid, why don't you root your droid yourself and pay someone to fix it if you mess up. :D

    But you won't.

I heard about the solicitations, root services, and offers popping up on Craigslist -- "I'll root your Droid $40", etc.... I checked Craigslist Tampa and saw a listing. I have no clue how legit this party is or isn't, so use your best judgement. Here's the link... Root and install custom roms on androids

Thanks Kbayer, had not even thought of that.

    Kelmar,
The guy advertising on Craig's list is asking $50 dollars to root, rom and add tethering, don't know who it is, but I would be willing to let you or your brother do it for the same, before I call the craig's list guy if one of you is interested. If not no big deal and I call him, but I figured I would rather pay the cash to someone here who has been helpful.

Seriously it take about 1 hour tops to read, then reread, watch the video, Download the tools, flash SPrecovery, Root, install Ultimate Droid, then install Cynogenmod, Then Jrummy's Cynogenmod remix. (YMMV)

And the best thing about androidforums, The reason why I joined it. The community is great. When I decided to get my droid I read all the forums and kind of fell in love with androidforums because there place is noob friendly.

And Besides CRPercodani and Fabolous are great sources of information. I would like to have their man-babies.

do not pay soem random joe blow off the net to root your droid. you have to learn this stuff otherwise whats gonna happen when something eventually breaks or needs to be upgraded? your gonna pay him more $$ to fix it lol. seriously man the time youve spent on this thread is wayyyy more then it would have taken to root. also that guy could f up your droid then you would be screwed.

    no man baby requests please.

Wow, I heard the Big Robot voice on that post. But all in all, CRPercodani is right. And this forum is awesome when you need help. If you are nervous I would recommend baby steps.

After reading those links again, I would start with the preliminary Skills in http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/45764-guide-s-everything-root-related.html first. (they can also be found on Droidinfo with pics!)

Play with it until your comfortable, use the Brick gauge to see how careful you need to be.

When ready Follow Fab's Guide http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/63010-how-install-sprecovery-unrooted-2-1-ota.html as it is easier. (Hint Copy and Right click in Command window each line)

    Now your rooted.

At this point, you can take the easy way out and use Rom Manager, or Continue following the guides.

And remember, If you run into an issue, just ask for help or ask a question.

PS.. Hungry again and it's 9:30; and all I'm allowed to eat is salads. :(
