Greetings, I am new to android and it seems I have about the worst device for what I want to do. I like to customize things and my phone is possibly the thing I use most on any given day. Most things are easily customizable however it seems I always get stuck with the "freak" when it comes to technology. And yet once again this seems to be the case. I finally have another phone so I decided it is time to learn more about android. I have done some research and it is fascinating but I'm stuck when it comes to this phone. I can handle the easy stuff and that's where I started but the more things I try and the more reference I do, the more frustrated I am getting. I have been to a few different sites and have read and tried a few different things to no avail. I see from what I have found that this is not a very popular phone so I am not expecting much, but I am hoping that someone will be able to at least point me in the right direction with this thing.
At the moment I would just like to find out if it is possible to root this thing. I see that it is very similar to the Ally but I don't want to try anything from that forum until I get some more information from someone who knows more about this. I would like to eventually get a different ROM and possibly do some developing with android itself but it's not looking good at the moment. I hope that someone can help. Sorry for the long boring post but I am almost at wits end with this and I am hoping someone will feel sorry for me and offer some assistance if that is even possible.
Thanks in advance for any and all replies, hopefully I will get at least something.

From what I can see, it does look like root is possible, just very temperamental.

There are a few methods you can try, z4root and Gingerbreak. I presume it was you posting in the thread I saw on XDA, did you try any of the methods mentioned?

Yes, I did post in xda forums. I have tried z4root several times, it does nothing. I have not tried Gingerbreak yet. As I posted in XDA, I have some paid apps and such on the phone that I don't really want to risk losing. I am trying to gain insight into backing it up. I have a spare micro-sd to work with but I know some of the data is on the phone memory so that's what I need to back up.
I have also tried Universal Androot and Super_One_Click to no avail, it doesn't seem that any of the easy methods will work. I have also downloaded Droid Explorer and Android Commander on my PC and have had separate issues with them. Additionally I have Eclipse and ADB development tools but don't really know how to use them well yet, that's going to take me a bit to figure out.
Thank you for the reply, I'm going to keep working on this.

Thank you, I appreciate any help I can get. If you need any info I will gladly provide it to the best of my ability.
I am also interested in some general info on backing up the data on the phone memory and how to work with SDK. There is a lot of somewhat confusing information out there and many posters sidetrack threads so it is hard to get a clear guide. If anyone knows of the best step by step guides for someone new to these things I would be very interested as well.
I'm willing to do the work, I just need to find the right info.

No luck I'm afraid, sorry :(

It is the LG Ally, do the root methods for that work?

Not sure, haven't tried anything other than the methods that are the same as this phone. I have tried z4root, super one click, and universal androot on the phone. I have Droid Explorer and Android Commander on the PC. I have also downloaded Eclipse and Android SDK but have not really tried anything yet. Droid Explorer keeps giving me an out of memory error. Android Commander does about the same as any of the explorer apps on the phone, one of the buttons at the bottom of the windows says; Root Access NO, but if I open a command window I see the # instead of $, which I have read indicates that the phone is rooted. Also I have SuperUser in my apps list on the phone which I have also read that indicates the phone is rooted as well. I noticed that was there after Super One Click but it doesn't show anything in the apps list and I don't really know what to do with it.
That's what I have tried so far and the only results I have noticed. I have an app called Root Explorer that is supposed to show the hidden data files on the phone's memory once the phone is rooted and it is not and I haven't been able to get rid of any of the stock apps. Universal Androot gave me the "no root" error. I'm quite confused, it seems like it is partially rooted or something, if that is even possible. Oh well, I'm just going to keep searching, reading, and trying things until I can either get something to work or give up.
Thanks for your effort on this El Presidente, I will post if I get anywhere.

Does an app like Titanium Backup work?

No, tried it, the phone isn't rooted. I tried rageagainstthecage as well, terminal emulator will not re-open on step 7. Going to try Gingerbreak next. I finally learned how to use ABD to communicate with the phone so I'm a bit more comfortable trying more difficult things. Thanks.

I finally got the phone rooted with Gingerbreak! Worked like a charm, Titanium Backup is working and Root Explorer can shows ALL files! Awesome, thank you for pointing me in the right direction El Presidente.:D

I was able to root my LG Apex using Gingerbreak 1.2. How do I tell which ROMS are compatible with my phone? I have been google searching roms and compatible devices but the only one that I can find clearly listed is Cyanogenmod and that does not seem to be compatible.

All I really want is a simple ROM that can support both the native apps and the app market, but I want it to have more power saving features and the ability to tell any application installed to close.
