Err hi. First time poster. Many times reader.

I recently bought an Asus Transformer Infinity as a study device, writing notes, reading pdfs, all that jazz.

It works as it should (although I can't seem to find a satisfactory office suite. But that's a problem for another time) most of the time. But then it may, without any warning do one of these things:

    1. It may simply crash to desktop. This happens a lot while playing games such as Uplink or Babel Rising. This happens very suddenly but may be preceded by a freeze or a white screen. Often this is just a CTD and I may continue as I did but some times...

    2. When using any program (such as the aforementioned games or my twitter client Plume) the screen may go blank and stop responding to any input. The only thing that works here is a hard reset. This is extremely worrying as I am afraid of losing important study notes, and because I have no reason to expect these crashes.

    3. Another problem is that my home screen some times, especially when scrolling between screens, go completely blank. This does not mean the same as number 2 problem though, because I can still return to other programs and even open Google search and the app drawer by touching their respective corners. Although this is not as debilitating as the other 2 problems it is nonetheless unfixable unless I restart the device. At least to my knowledge. The widgets and shortcuts on the screen never reappears.

Am I unlucky and have I gotten a faulty device? Should I return it for another or is there some kind of miracle fix for any or all of these problems? I really don't want to return this wonderful machine but I still don't feel safe leaving important documents or a device that could "collapse" at any time.

I have been researching my problem quite I bit but I haven't found that many who has the same problem as I do so I still pray that it's a lone case. I have found even fewer with the home screen problem (number 3) So there may be a fix for that so I don't have to restart the device every time it happens. Maybe a way to restart that application?

Anyways I hope and hope again you fine people can help me so I don't have to part with my baby and go back to my decade old laptop. My back and me will praise you.

    Many regards

Hmm that might very well be the best option. I'll go to the store next time I'm going home. Thanks a lot :)

I feel your pain buddy. I'm sending my second unit back to amazon because of frequent crashes.

Sometimes it's prudent to try doing a hard reset of the device. In other Android devices people have seen that sometimes the firmware finds itself in a slightly unstable state... doing a full reset of the device can often correct this.

If you choose to do this, PLEASE remember to back up all of your important data first!

I don't like apples os but my family members ipads never crash and seem so smooth vs my TF700. I hope JB updates come soon to make the TF700 just as smooth.

Smoother doesn't necessarily make it better...

I believe non crashing events and no random reboots does.

Hmm good idea. I'm trying to do a factory reset (I hope this is what you mean) and I'll let you know how it went afterwards.

Oh and thanks for all the answers you guys. I really appreciate them as I have little to no knowledge of android tablets (or other devices than HTC's)

I just have to respond to this. Within the context of the crashing problems the OP had brought up, you could argue that smoother is better. Given how superior the hardware under the hood of the infinity is supposed to be, it might just be possible that whatever software/firmware issues that cause the interface to not be smooth are also the same underlying causes of the crashes/freezes that some people are experiencing.

Alright. I've done a factory reset and run some stress tests on it. To no avail sadly :(

Uplink still crashes regularly and without reason. This could be a fault with the game itself, posts on Introversions could certainly point that way.

But much worse is the apparent crashing of the dashboard/desktop/home screen app which leaves me with my background. Now my app drawer goes blank too during the crashing.

I have also been seeing a lot of strange happenings in otherwise stable programs: Freezing of the Calendar app, OfficeSuite being unable to save being amongst the most debilitating.

I have yet to encounter the complete "meltdown" of the system where everything freezes but I kinda suspect it's still there.

Imma go down to the store tomorrow after classes and get someone to look at it. Then I hope and pray that that's the end of that chapter.

You have been extremely helpful all of you. I've also been following your discussion and wholeheartily agree, Smoothness should be a high priority in a machine so powerful as this one.

    Many kind regards
