Help is their anyway safe way to update a rooted phone

I had a at&t galaxy S2 skyrocket for a few years now, im currently running gingerbread 2.3.5 sand ive been researching was to update the phone but theirs always the risk of soft or hard bricking the phone, please help,

The safe options for updating a rooted phone are either (a) install a more recent custom ROM, or (b) return completely to stock software and then accept any official updates.

I m run also 2.3.6 I want to run more app who not comfortable in my phone of use of build prop but hell is my bad luck happens and my phone not support any apps while 23/5/2015

If you follow Hadron's advice, you won't brick

Imo it's not so much updating a rooted phone that's a risk but updating a phone with altered system, custom recovery etc but I could be wrong
