I don't have a text messaging on my smartphone with my mobile service provider.

But since I have internet access ($25/month) and can send emails via gmail, is there any way handcent can help me?

Specifically, will handcent allow me to send and receive text messages with folks who do have text messaging without having to purchase a texting service plan?

Is HandCent performing a little better with 2.1? I occasionally see post that people are having issues shortly after loading it. Those issues being slower phone performance, force closes and general laggy-ness.

I just found textplus that's free also. I actually used it on my iPhone 3gs before I got the Droid. I like it.

No. Handcent can only send text messages via your carrier. You can email people using their carriers' SMS gateways though.

Also, the GV app uses data for SMS.

Can't say. I never had issues with Handcent and 2.0.1.

I don't understand why everyone thinks Handcent is so great. It was no better or worse than the OEM app.

Txt+ is on the marketplace. The free messaging app from Iphones and Itouch's. Try using it.

Thanks very much Takeshi for the helpful answer. I'll quit trying to make handcent do anything for me.

with textplus do you get a dedicated number for people to text you at.. or how does that work?

can they only text you using 'reply to' after you text them via textplus?

    thanks
