Is X10 worth buying? The thing which worries me is its OS version, 1.6. Desire and Legend seem to be more enchanting with 2.1.

How great is the difference b/w 1.6 and 2.1?

The big thing with the X10 is UX - Timescape and Mediascape along with the camera features. In that respect, the X10 doesn't really need 2.0/1; those features are the big draw.

2.0 could petentially offer a few more feaures, and a handful of apps from Android Market.

What is 'UX'? Actually I read that some apps aren't compatible with 1.6. That's was also one of the reasons.

UX is the overall skin SE have applied to Android, including Timescape and Mediascape.

Yes, there are a few apps which you'll miss with the device hitting the stores with 1.6 - I think Google Earth is one of the most notable. There is an upgrade to 2.0/1 promised by the end of the year, but I am personally not banking on it until its on my phone (I'm just one of those pesimists). What you're buying into with the X10 is an Android phone wrapped with Time and Mediascape, along with great camera functionality; if you're unhappy with that, simply don't buy.

You need to think about what your purchase will do for you.

but what about the 800 pound gorilla in the room? yes, i am not talking about the android version. i am not talking about the useless timescape or the useful mediascape. i am talking about the VERY WELL DOCUMENTED SERIOUS issues with the virtual keyboard. how would u feel if someone was selling you an overpriced porsche that looks great except that its steering wheel does not work properly?

sony ericsson can go take a dump for all i care if after all this time, they still could not produce a phone that has a decent VK and that has a good touchscreen (yes, in ALMOST EVERY VIDEO of the X10, you see unregistered taps on the screen...lame).

being a pessimist myself I sympathize with the feeling, though I don't think that it will take until the end of the air for the next update. SE has been hinting that it may ship the phone with 2.x, so even if it ships with 1.6 the update should not be too far off.

In any case, what I am hoping for is that in a bit some mods, cyanogen for instance, will come out that will give it 2.x capabilities, this would probably require rooting tho. There have been mods that enabled 2.x to the G1 so I am going to remain somewhat hopeful.

I was willing to put up with the fact that it ran on 1.6 but with no multi-touch this is just not the phone for me.

    I absolutely agree.

Now I need to figure out what to do, as I was relying on the X10 being a decent phone as it was looking like the best Rogers had on contract.

Desire is looking like a better phone. However, I still want an X10 instead! lol

You did hear that it's confirmed that the X10 hardware doesn't support any kind of multi-touch, right?

Yeah, but on this Hero, I only use pinch to zoom, which is technically "dual touch" I believe? That should be available on the 2.0 upgrade?

Nope. To quote Sumit's official post:

No hardware simultaneous entries, means no pinch-zoom.

This is my question too...I know of all the potential problems with lack of multi / dual touch, sony's lack of support with updates but still I want this over the HTC Desire. Am I crazy

With all its flaws it is still a gorgeous phone and it should satisfy the average user. However since I like to play around with the phone and install all kinds of apps in it, then I have decided to wait for something that fits my needs a little more, something like the HTC EVO, even though it is not going to be available in Europe.

you are not alone. even with all X10's flaws, 1.6, no MT, etc why do I still prefer it over Desire, even though it is quite clear that Desire is a better phone.

X10 in my opinion, the best looking android (except HTC EVO), more so, after using HTC HD2, anything sub 4" is a no go for me, all its multimedia features are best, Mediascape is a huge plus for me, but, I really need to choose wisely, God knows when SE will update X10 to 2.1,more so, there is no chance of MT ever coming to X10 due to hardware.

I would appreciate it, if anyone can tell me the main differences between 1.6 and 2.1, most importantly, is the difference a deal breaker. Also, TFT vs AMOLED, is the difference that huge?

    Thanks.

As much as I prefer the design and styling of the X10, I see no reason to buy it other than to sell for the Desire (the X10 will be available on contract through Rogers, hence this option). The Desire is simply the better phone:

    • Android 2.1
    • FM Tuner
    • AMOLED Screen
    • Multi-Touch
    • 512MB RAM (vs. 384MB for X10)

The AMOLED screen is more vibrant than a typical TFT, and has more consistent brightness due to the fact the pixels themselves glow, rather than having to be backlit. AMOLED does have display problems in direct sunlight, but then TFT's aren't great in direct sun either.

There's also a question of color capability of the X10. Running Android 1.6 it's limited to 64K colors. SE has yet to confirm that with an Android update what the screen's color capability is (I've read 256K colors). By comparison, the screen on the HTC Desire is capable of displaying a full 16 million colors.

Join the club! lol  Desire shape just isn't modern or 'edgy' enough, despite the better specification. TFT screen on X10 better in direct sunlight than Desire's AMOLED.

Same here, the Desire doesn't do anything for me either. I'm currently using the Omnia II with a custom rom and imho don't see any advantage in me getting the Desire over what I'm currently using...just my opinion so don't shoot my down in flames people ;)

I have the X10, and I think it is the most amazing phone for me:) 4 inch screen. 1ghz. I have it in white. :)

The rumor of 1.6 is true. Eventually they will upgrade it to 2.1 or whatever is current. It runs MediaScape/Timescape on top of Android. Good for social networking.

Now, some users like the most current version of Android, I can understand that, and so the Nexus One will always have the most updated. The desire is always a good phone and has HTC sense on top of it.

We have choices, so know what you want before buying.

What to do, what to do? :D It's now available through O2, so I could sprint down there during a work break tomorrow (assuming it's in the O2 store as well as in stock via the web). However, will I be regretting that choice when / if the Desire is available on O2?

I have to say that from what I've seen of Android 2.1, I'm still not sure of the advantage! Yes, the weather screens animations are a bit sportier, but other than that, I have no idea!

If you like the weather screen/clock from HTC Sense, you can download some widgets called "beautiful widgets" from Android Market, it looks like, and takes the look of the HTC Hero's clocks.

Exactly. It's always funny how people with no X10 love to blow things out of proportion completely...
