....and release FROYO or whatever is gonna fix the whole lot of bugs and glitches in 2.1. seriously this is ridiculous!!!! how is it that android had multi-tasking from day one and yet it is still poorly implemented and yet iphone OS 4 is already implementing it better than android? ridiculous!!! i saw the vids on youtube and the mutlitasking feature is typical Apple (smooth, fast, intuitive, and eye-pleasing UI) and yet android users are stuck with friggin taskkiller and 3d party task managers? unacceptable!!!

also, what's up with the N1 complaints? i truly thought that it was the first few lots and i was contemplating jumping back on the android ship and yet people are still having N1 problems? this is INSANE! i mean the large number of VERY WELL REPORTED issues leave you thinkin to urself: is there anything that works on this god forsaken phone? seriously google! seriously!

now forget about the minor issues being reported but wait! the touchscreen is unresponsive and you have to reboot to awaken it? you gotta be kiddin me. i mean the most important thing about a touchscreen phone is its......hhhmmmm..touchscreen? seriously google....fix the siftware bug that's making the screen unresponsive ASAP!!!..and on a seperate note: why cheap out and go with the NOT-TRULY multitouch clearpad2000? why? why? why cheap out on the subpixels? why? what's up with the friggin 3g antenna?

is this what the EVO is gonna be like too? is this what all upcoming android devices are gonna be like? GREAT ON PAPER HORRIBLE AND BUGGY iN PRACTICE.....i was excited about almost getting the N1 and now i have to worry whether or not my N1 is gonna b one of the few that are good out there....

i just wanted to add one last thing about my feelings towards Apple: i love Apple and i hate them too.....
i love how their products are all pretty, make you look preppy and their OS mobile and mac are both just downright awesome and super refined. but i hate how they are invincible and how everyone else in the tech world is constantly trying to catch up with them to no avail! it's actually very depressing because apple turns people into sheep that do nothing but follow the shpperd that steve jobs is. when i see everyone and their mother owning an iphone, it makes me realize that i 'd like to stand out from the crowd and be imaginative by owning an android device, and yet android keeps failing me. i have thought of buying N1 for months now and everytime i am about to do it, i waver. i just dont wanna end up like everyone else, accepting the inevitable: the supremacy of the apple product. i dont know if'i'll get N1 or not. but it's just sad. i am pissed that iphone OS 4 has multitasking and i am more pissed that the way they implemented it is as handsome and intuitive as their amazing copy-paste feature.....sigh

..come on Google, get it straight and fix this OS and release us a nice media player already....get us multitasking cards or somethin....if palm and apple can do it, why can't google?

How can iPhone 4.0 be better if:

1.) It still isn't real multitasking

    2.) It isn't out yet.

i know what u mean. you're basically saying that the apps that are in the background are not actually open in iphone os 4.

but still, the point is that the user has an easy time controlling them and seeing what apps are running simultaneously. i would say that the implementation of palm is better than that of iphone OS 4 and that it is indeed real multitasking. i would also say that apple, as usual, did not invent the idea but was inspired by webos.

it is not out yet but it will be. i guess u're implying that there will be an android update soon that might include user features superior to that of iphone os 4 by the time iphone os 4 comes out. i dunno. does google work that hard on android? can google work that hard on android if it's spreading itself thin over projects like chrome os, tablet, android TV......

by the way, did you see the complete video presentation of steve jobs? did you see the folders feature? sure, you might say that android had folders from day one but again, apple perfected it. check out the video....the folders feature in os 4 is just awesome.

i am just pissed that apple seems to be beating android at its own game and that google seems to be deaf when it comes to users' complaints. also, i got very disappointed by engadget's post regarding N1 issues. i was actually doing my financial calculations and all... preparing to buy a N1 and then it turns out that the phone is STILL FULL of issues the way it was in the first week it came out.

where is android going? do you know? if a close friend of yours asks you to recommend a smartphone, would u recommend an android phone?

i guess my point is this: when will android mature in the sense that some aspects of it become perfect? can you list 3 perfect things in android? just list 3.

and how long has android been out compared to iPhone? How many phones does android have to run on compared to iPhone? You have a team that has been working on the software for longer with iPhone as well as they just have to design it for 1 set of hardware or minor changes in hardware. Of course its releases are going to be more refined. Still doesnt mean its worth a dam.

    Lol.. Serious man?

First off, Explain to me ONE thing thats "perfect" about iPhone. Really. I'll pick you apart all day.

And how, exactly, are Apples folders any better than android, or other mobile os? Seriously? Someone needs some Google Goggles so he can see better.

And android had recently used apps feature since, i dunno, forever?
You just hold down the home button.

This just goes to show you are trolling, do not and have not owned an android device, and are only here to start trouble.

To everyone else: Lets report this guy as spam, because that's exactly what it is.

Everyone isn't trying to catch up to Apple. In fact for any Apple product I could probably name a dozen competitors that do a much better job.

So what you saw was actually single-tasking, just with the ability to switch directly between them? Thanks, but I'll stick with the ability to actually do two tasks at once, I'd call that 'better'. Why task-killers? Stock Android works just fine at multi-tasking without having to go near a task-killer. And what a surprise, a promo presentation in a controlled, pre-recorded environment looked smooth. No shit. I could make Windows 3.1 look like a masterpiece when no-one can touch it and I can do as many takes as I need.
Examples? I can guarantee you, for every one you find, I can find an equally well-reported one on the 3GS, and that's a phone well in to it's 3rd generation, the N1 is Google's first attempt at selling hardware
Lol, that has to be one of the most depressingly sad things I've ever read. Your rationale for getting an Android phone is you don't want to be seen to conform? What age are you, 12? If you think the iPhone is such a superior product, then **** off and get one, so we don't have to put up with your nonsensical rants
Actually, what he was implying is that iPhone OS 4.0 hasn't come close to being tested in any meaningful way. When it's actually in the hands of millions of consumers and has then performed flawlessly, without any faults, then you can say that it's a much surperior product. Otherwise you're basing your opinions on... well I have no idea what you're basing your opinions on, but it's nothing to do with facts.
You're right, a $40 billion company with 20,000 employees is just spreading themselves too thin
Wow, I was really expecting something innovative in that video. That's probably one of the least impressive things I've ever seen. It is in no way any better than Android's folders feature, it's practically a carbon copy, apart from a weird slide thing the iPhone does to bring a folder up which serves no function whatsoever
    Over an iPhone? Absolutely

Oh, one thing you forgot to mention from the "new" features of the iPhone OS - iAds. Pretty much the same thing as existed in Android from the beginning. It's a good thing for developers, brings in a new revenue-generating method, rather than relying on traditional means of payment. However, on Android, if the user wishes, there are multiple ways of blocking ads. It's a pretty safe bet that there is no way Apple will let an AdBlock app into the AppStore, so the user is pretty much sent up shit creek

Of the 4 big improvements to the iPhone OS (folders, wallpapers, iAds and multi-tasking (sort-of)) all of them have been in Android from at least 1.5.

one of the things that are perfect about the iphone is scrolling. another is touchscreen responsiveness.

apple's folders is not better. it's just nicer. my bad if i did not clarify that.

recently used apps is not multitasking.

i have owned an android device before. i had a mt3g for a year and i probably spent more money than you on the android market. i actually spent all together about 109$ on the market. your assumption is wrong. and i purchased the mt3g the day it was released for 200$.

not here to start trouble. i just want justification to buy the N1.

i agree with almost all of your arguments. i guess i need to look at all this from a different view point.
the one thing i disagree with you on is when you claim that i am being childish (12 y/o) by wanting an N1 for the sole purpose of not conforming. surely, i want a smartphone because i actually need one. and yes, one of the main reasons i dont "**** off" and get an iphone is that i dont want a phone that everyone has. there is nothing childish about wanting to stand out from the crowd. maybe trivial in the grand scheme of things but not childish.
at any age, one may want to be imaginative and come up with something different and fresh.

now, which android phone would u recommend to your friend, assuming your friend needs a device NOW, not in the summer?

Correct. IOWA didn't say it was. You claimed the iPhone's implementation of multi-tasking was better because the UI for switching between them was 'intuitive'. Android has had that feature from day one. And the iPhone doesn't have multi-tasking now. It just saves the state of one task before switching to another, then restoring it when you switch back. That's the definition of not multi-tasking. Android can set a task running, switch to another task and run the first task in the background. That's multi-tasking
What is childish is wanting to stand out from the crowd at the expense of anything else. If you think iPhones are so superior, get one. Going for what you see as an inferior phone purely in order to stand out is clearly childish.

In the UK I would be recommending the HTC Desire or if that's too big the HTC Legend.

I spent half an hour with a (iPhone owning) Vodafone rep today who was showing me the HTC Legend and it ended up with me giving HIM a guided tour of it's features. He was well impressed. He preferred it to his iPhone.

He particularly liked the Android widgets over just having a mass of icons on the iPhone. Also HTC Sense running on an AMOLED screen was slick and fluid and to quote anotherfandroid it was very pretty ;)

most of this thread reads like fanboy ranting. however the original poster did bring up a point that I have wondered about. Why is it that on a system designed to run multiple apps and to store files outside the system, a built in task killer and file manager are not included? why as a user do I have to go to a 3rd part app to do something integral to the system.

IO have the tools I need on my Droid, but I always did wonder why the more essential of them were not a standard built in android feature.

    any thoughts?

Technically, a task killer isn't needed per se, and you can force-stop running processes through menu -> Applications. I do agree, though, that a file manager should have been built-in. Very bizarre that it isn't (Symbian has one, even).
