I've 2.1, update 1 for Sprint Hero; can I reboot?

You can always root! You can grab the Z4Root app and it is an easy one-click affair. Unfortunately, that app is no longer in the Android Market, but you can find it here: Download z4root.1.3.0.apk . :D

You will have to plug your Sprint HTC Hero into computer and mount it as a mass storage device. Then you can copy that .apk file into your microSD card. Be sure to enable USB debugging and the install applications from non-market sources also. Then, unmount your handset from your computer. You will also need a file explorer, from the Android Market, like EStrongs to install that .apk file. Just install EStrongs File Explorer and then navigate to your microSD card and find the .apk file and run it to install it. Finally, you will have to run the Z4Root app and then just choose to root by pressing the button. Let us know how that worked out. If you want to change ROMs there are more steps, but why not try the above first to see if you can get that far. :)
