Hi peeps, nice forum you seem to have over here.

This is my first post here so i'll bore you with a tiny bit of background.

I'm a bit of a phone geek and I never seem to be able to hold on to the same phone for very long before I just have to have the next big thing. I hope i'm not doomed to this behaviour forever as it gets expensive, I always intend that my new phone will be with me a long time, it just never really happens.

I started this craze when the T-Mob G1 hit the stores, I couldn't resist the pull of this funky new Android OS, so I treated myself. Loved the OS of that phone, hated the battery, hated the handset in general - just never felt safe with that whole slidy out mechanism thing.

Next came a nokia N79. I told myself that I didn't need an all singing and dancing device like a G1 just wanted a solid phone with 3G and Wifi. Anyway, ended up breaking the screen with a dodgy car charger, so had to go out and buy a nokia 5800 as an immediate replacement.

I loved that little 5800, but I just started to feel that it was no iphone when I was seeing so many of those damn things around, guess what happened next? yep, sold the 5800 and bought an iphone 3GS.

What that thing does blew me away, never seen (touched) a touch screen like it, but, I grew tired of the restricions and limitations, oh and the nokia N900 was on the horizon, so I fell out of love with my iphone

Enter my current device, Nokia N900. I've been thoroughly impressed with this one, or at least it's amazing web browser, if i'm honest, the rest of the phone is too rough around the edges, there are no apps, wifi is very dodgy, and i've never really been a fan of those hardware QWERTY keyboards.

My facination is now lying with this nexus one, I ordered one from Google late last night, I guess the wheels wont start rolling until Monday morning in California....

    Anyway, my few questions are:

1: how long does it take to get here (UK) from USA?
2: Google talk: - on my N900 I can stay signed on 100% of the time, and if someone sends me a message I get a notification much like a text, how does this work on the N1?
3: Google maps: does the map rotate depending on what direction you are travelling in like on the iphone 3GS? like with the digital compass? that would be awesome
4: Supposedly you can write a text message / IM via voice controls, is that right? how does that work out in the real world? useful? easy?
5: Are there any problems with WIFI? this is a big factor in me wanting to sell my N900, it seriously drains the power, far more than does 3G - even when you are no longer connected to the wifi, unless you reboot, power consuption is crazy. Also, my N900 wont load google mail when on WIFI - WTF is that? does it fine on gprs / 3G but not on wifi. Hopefully there is no strange issues like this on the N1 - oh, and does it just join the wifi automatically like my G1 and iphone did?

Thanks, and sorry for the long one ;)

From the UK at the moment, you should get it by Friday if you are lucky.

I'm still confused, do your phones normally support SMS over wifi or something? This is new to me for sure, texts come though the networks 'message centre' over here.

1: how long does it take to get here (UK) from USA?

Takes between 3 and 5 days, normally. It depends when you order. I ordered on a Tuesday evening and got mine on Friday, my brother ordered a month later on a Tuesday evening as well (on my advise!) and didn't receive his til the Monday. Nothing much at all happens to your parcel at the weekend, so I don't recommend ordering then!

You should also take into account any anti-fraud systems your bank have in place. I received a call from my bank in the evening, but you may be better off giving them a pre-emptive call before ordered to let them know you have big foreign moolah coming out of your account :)

3: Google maps: does the map rotate depending on what direction you are travelling in like on the iphone 3GS? like with the digital compass? that would be awesome

Not as far as I know. Especially as the full-on navigation is not available in the UK. You can use GPS and the route planner to navigate, but you won't be getting turn-by-turn directions or voice directions. But because of this, your phone won't be switching the screen orientation even if it is possible in the US.

4: Supposedly you can write a text message / IM via voice controls, is that right? how does that work out in the real world? useful? easy?

I don't use it frequently, but there have been loooooads of people singing the praises of this function! Some people say they can speak naturally into the phone and it'll work great, others take on a staccato approach (like "hi. mike. how. you. doing. questionmark.") Bear in mind you need a data connection (wi-fi/3G) for this to work as it's done by Google's servers and not your phone. Noise-cancelling mic works wonders for this too.

No problems with wi-fi for me. I leave it turned on and connected for the majority of the day and I'll have around 30% of battery left by the next morning (not really useful for a full day out). Reconnections are fine for me too, I have 5 remembered networks and they all connect automatically when in range. Everything works great on wifi for me, actually (obviously except calls and texts!!) - I was using my phone without a SIM for the first five days.

Thanks for all the replies guys / girls :)

The thing I mean with google maps, is not so much whether the screen orientation flips between landscape / portrait - and I understand I wont be getting the voice guided navigation - bummer :( but what I mean is (hard to explain) but on the iphone (if any of you have used one?) it uses the devices digital compass to work out which way you are facing.

I'll try to explain with an example: say you are in a strange city, and you want to find a specific shop / landmark or what ever, you can open google maps and see the litte dot representing your location. Now, normally, up is north, down is south etc, except on the iphone, when you (the phone) turns, the map turns, making it far more easier to know which way you are facing, and thus where you need to go.

It doesn't, as far as I'm aware, do that, but your location dot does have a little arrow to indicate which direction you're travelling in.

Yep, you can pick a handy little arrow from Labs which uses the compass to know what you're doing.

Bit better than the standard dot.

the arrow in maps is much nicer than the previous dot...helpful if you need to orient yourself quickly in relation to your destination. sorry to hear you don't have the Navigation feature in your area?? I live by that feature. It does rotate the map as you make a turn and has a North arrow on the screen for reference, but the "up" position on the angled birdseye view is the direction you're traveling.
I find this Navigation feature wicked intuitive and crazy helpful.

Personally, i love the voice recognition for text entry...so helpful for 'texting' while driving...bit safer i should say :) I have probably 80% success rate with it...still very worth it as far as im concerned. (my standard text entry is probably less accurate:)

seems like a few people (more knowledgable than i) have weighed in for you on the other topics. just wanted to drop you my .02 on these features. I know i'd want to hear everyone's impressions also ahead of time.

If you haven't received it yet: you're gonna love it.
just watch the fragile screen (grrr)...mines damaged at the moment and waiting (likely unsuccessfully) for an Insurance replacement. But it was awesome for 8 days :(
