I've wanted the DX since launch day but thought I would wait until my upgrade date (today) to save some money and the 2.2 would be out. I woke up today and ordered my dx and then I came here to see what bugs and issues people are having with 2.2 ota and holy sh!t it's page after page of problems!! Will these bugs be worked out or should I send the x back when it arrives and get a Dinc?? :(

People who don't have problems, don't run to a forum and tell everyone the don't have problems...fortunately for you, they are the vast majority and the problems on this site are a very tiny piece of the pie.
    Don't worry

    Very nice statement!

As long as you don't go out and install every goofy looking app out there, you'll probably love this phone. I equate most of the complaints to being the same as computer complaints. Apps are usually the cause of the issues. It seems that most people that have rooted, frozen programs, messed in areas that they maybe shouldn't have, or installed a crazy apps are having issues.

RULE #1: DON'T INSTALL A TASK KILLER. IT WILL BREAK STUFF.

Download some stuff and have fun, but when all else fails, do a factory reset and start fresh. No real issues that I've seen from a fresh out of the box X.

Well, just to make you feel better, you will be having a fresh install of 2.2 with no much software in it. People are mainly having software conflicts. You will be starting from scratch.

I have 2.2 from the over the air update. Everything's totally fine, and I rooted it, additionally. I love it. It feels like a new phone.

Enjoy it! Don't worry in the least. Bring your questions to us or to Verizon customer service. You'll love it. It's one of the best phones in the world, right now. :D

I justed ordered mine also. I'm switching from a blackberry storm 1. According to the forums, everyone and their brother had trouble with it, but I didn't. I even changed OS's on it constantly. Like he ^ said, some people mess with things best left alone.

Same thing with every forum out there. You see the bad stuff......mostly. Have to read between the lines.
From what you've read, you'd think the BB Storm was the worst phone ever made. I had almost zero problems with it. It did 90% of what the DroidX does. It was a good phone but people 'dissed' it because they thought it would load a gazillion apps and they were embarrassed in front of their i-Phone buddies because it didn't do that. So they took it out on the phone. But it's basic functions worked very well. Actually some of it's functions are better than the DX.

Wow, Centrysis and I posted about the same thing at the same time!!

This is by far the best phone I have ever owned and the 2.2 update made the phone even better. Enjoy! You made the right choice.

If it says anything, my phone was one of the unrooted, unleaked Froyo, Blur running, stock Droid X phones that was bricked yesterday during the OTA update. Still being within the first 30 days I could have switched phones and walked out with a new Fascinate or Droid 2 or whatever, but all I was interested in was getting a replacement DX as soon as possible.

I think what he means is don't use an automatic task killer.

Android, like any 'nix OS has plenty of daemons and services running in the background that average joe probably has no clue about, and killing the wrong ones, or letting them get killed by auto task killers wreaks havoc on the OS. Issues anywhere from stuff won't poll when it's supposed to, to lockups and even shutting off.

Using a task killer to simply kill a non-responding application though? Perfectly fine.

I can't tell you how it breaks stuff but I can tell you how bad it sucks not having it on 2. 2. Whatever I'm doing gets shut down due to "not enough memory" especially the browser and I lose what I was doing and sometimes can't get back to were I was. I have to go in and manually to stop all the crap I don't use, EVER, so that I can use things I use all day long, then the crap is up and running again in 5 minutes. I miss being able to hit one button when my phone starts to lag to fix it, now it takes awhile and I just give up on using my phone.

theres no need for a task killer on 2.2. task killing is already in place natively by going to settings -> applications -> manage applications

app based task killers are redundant, in essence, as Android OS already has an inherent task killer at kernel level.

a lot of the battery consumption, reboot issues are due to task killers.

task MANAGERS are fine, however, as these apps (like minfreemanager, autokiller) merely set parameters for when Android OS ITSELF should kill the tasks.

IN ESSENCE, let ANDROID OS do the work of killing tasks. Just sit back. This is NOT WINDOWS OS, BLACKBERRY OS, or any other OS, its ANDROID OS.

I have to caps lock for this emphasis. Every developer for Android are AGAINST task killers. If you don't believe I will start compiling data / sources / quotes of Android developers/Google developers of how task killing is a bad idea.

This myth of 'task killing' is good for Android is simply not true. It needs to be stopped.

Amen on the no task killing front!!

I also came from a Storm 1 and a Palm Treo running Windows mobile before that. I have not rooted nor installed any leaked OS prior to the OTA upgrade install. I LOVE MY PHONE. Best phone on the market. Don't be 'skerd and accept that you made a great choice in a phone that will have you keeping it long past your new every 2 if you have that!

I received my DX one week before the OTA and it ran beautifully on the original 2.1 OS. I did the upgrade yesterday afternoon and...it STILL runs beautifully, with one exception - its now faster!

I love this phone, especially coming from Palm OS, which I seemed to have nothing but problems with the past year (this prompted my switch, even though I've been a Palm user since my first smartphone in 2003). Is the DX perfect? No - there are even some things the Palm did that my DX can't do as easily (sync to PC, BT tether to my Powerbook G4, sort phone contacts by last name, for instance). But the added functionality, screen size, speed and so forth are such an improvement over my previous phone - its a Buick to Ferrari change for me.

I haven't had any major problems with the phone like others here have posted - if anything does come up I will definitely seek answers here as I did to figure out the G4 tethering (which I can do now BTW). IMHO you'll be very pleased when you get your phone as well:D

PS - I am not running an ATK, but I have close to 40 apps I've added via the Market without any headaches. Everything is as it should be and I'm extremely happy with my decision to change phones!

Oh I've been living without it for 2 months now! I just wonder what I'll do with it!! All I do now is watch videos about it and lurk on the Droid boards! I'll probably just sit around and customize it constantly and never use the browser or make calls! :p :D

    On a serious note...

I use the browser more on this phone than I do my desktop PC or laptop now...it's that easy and quick.

The first couple of days with it are overwhelming, but you will be busy for sure :D

If you can do it..root it...opens up some other very cool things (wireless tether and SetCPU are a couple of the best) SetCPU is used to underclock the CPU in order to preserve battery when the phone is not in use...check out the thread in the Tip & Tricks section I believe...very awesome app.

This is pretty much my experience as well, except I'm only on my second day. :)

I ran the X on 2.1 for about 9 hours before installing the 2.2 OTA update. The X is definitely much smoother and overall it's a much nicer experience with the device running 2.2.
